Not a bad way to start your high school career. Greta Garbuzovas is a winner! The freshman, who recently won a state title, is now the Wrestler of the Year.

You read that right. Greta Garbuzovas, wrestling at the 140-lb class, was 49-0. That’s a ZERO. She never lost, and won the State Championship in her weight class!

Voting included our 17-person panel made up of sports reporters, writers, video producers, former coaches, players, GHSA officials, and sports experts. The voting is Heisman-style, with the following points system:
1st place votes: 5 pts; 2nd: 3 pts; 3rd: 2 pts; 4th: 1 pts; 5th-6th: 0.5 pts; 7th-8th 0.25 pts

Greta Garbuzovas took 16 of 17 1st-place votes, and her only other vote was a 2nd-place tally. That gave her a landslide win over state champion Ollie Kate Weiland from White County. Weiland did claim a top vote in the process.

Greta Garbuzovas becomes only the 3rd wrestler to ever win the award, and only winner aside from White County’s Sidney Sullens. Garbuzovas is the first Lumpkin grappler and first freshman, so she can potentially claim it for the next several years.
