Diamond Preview: Union County Panthers

Union County is making the playoffs a habit. The Panthers have gone to the postseason in each of the past 3 seasons (excluding the COVID 2020 season). Last year’s team is mostly graduated and moved on, but a few familiar leaders are back to see if they can make it to state a fourth straight full season.
HEAD COACH: Zach Odom (5th Season)
2022 RECORD: 9-20; 2A State Round 1
RETURNING STARTERS: 3
KEY DEPARTURES: 9 Seniors including Christopher Fletcher, Logan Anderson, Thomas Dyer, and Tyler Loyd
KEY PLAYERS: Hunter Fleming, Will Duncan, Jordan Gilliam, Brayden Sweat
STRENGTHS: “We will be a young team but will rely on leadership from Will Duncan on the mound, Hunter Fleming in the outfield, and Brayden Sweat behind the plate,” states Odom. “Even being young, there is a lot of talent that I look forward to watching grow throughout the season.”

While the Panthers have just a few starters back and so many without major experience at the varsity level, Union County will continue to set the standard high for themselves.
“We will be young, even with the older guys because of lacking a lot of playing experience, but the expectation of winning the region and giving ourselves a chance in the playoffs will always be our goal.”
