Diamond Preview: Towns County Indians

Momentum is on Towns County’s side. The 2022 season saw the Indians post 13 wins, the most since at least 2010, and making the postseason for the first time since 2017. With a good many starters back, it’s easy to see this team taking the next step.
HEAD COACH: Shannon Floyd (9th Season)
2022 RECORD: 13-14; 1A Public State Round 1
RETURNING STARTERS: 6
KEY DEPARTURES: Collin Crowder, Kyle Oakes, Cabe Poston
KEY PLAYERS: JR P Zane Floyd (All-Region), JR P Kade McConnell (All-Region), JR C Connor Chastain (All-Region), SR IF Seth Gillis (All-Region), JR OF Tanner Cunningham (All-Region)
STRENGTHS: “We will have an experienced team with upperclassmen filling the roster,” says Floyd. “Zane Floyd, Kade McConnell, and Matthew Chastain should anchor our pitching staff. Seth Gillis, Connor Chastain, Tanner Cunningham and Stone Chauncey, all returning starters, will build off their great seasons of a year ago. And we’re excited about the return of Caleb Berrong ( from injury) and also Layne Rouse (both seniors). “A player to watch will be Cale Kirby; he is a junior outfielder.”

The pitching should be a strong point for Towns County with Floyd, McConnell, and Matthew Chastain. Then you have great leadership with Connor Chastain, Seth Gillis and Tanner Cunningham. This could be a special run for the Indians if everyone plays to expectations.
“The team expects to return to the state playoffs and advance,” exclaims Floyd. “Looking forward to the year.”
