Jefferson takes Duals title to highlight wrestling championships

The 2023 GHSA Team Dual Wrestling State Championships were held on January 21. Of the teams in contention, local programs included Commerce and Jefferson.

JEFFERSON

The Dragons, competing in their first season at the Class 5A level, rolled on to a GHSA State Championship. The Dragons took on Locust Grove first, and cruised to a 65-6 final score to advance to the next round.

Jefferson then went up against Woodland-Cartersville, which proved to be more of a challenge. The Dragons scored 39 points to edge out Woodland-Cartersville.

That pitted Jefferson against Cass in a winner-take-all. The Dragons secured the 37-33 thrilling win to claim yet another wrestling state title for the program. It remains one of the top programs in state history, with more than two dozen championships.

COMMERCE

Commerce was quickly taken down by East Laurens, though it was quite the fight for the Tigers in the 43-32 loss in the opening matchup. That bumped Commerce down to the consolation bracket.

Going against Pepperell, Commerce won 46-33 to advance. Social Circle was next up, with the winner having the chance to play for 3rd place. Social Circle won 56-18 to end Commerce’s run in the tournament.
