Pitch Preview: Lumpkin County Indians

The Indians are coming off a third straight 2-win season, and will be looking to take the next step under new head coach Brent Howell, who is the third head coach since the 2020 season. There is plenty of excitement around the program.
HEAD COACH: Brent Howell (1st Season)
2022 RECORD: 2-10-1; No Playoffs
RETURNING STARTERS: 6-7
KEY DEPARTURES: 4 Seniors
KEY PLAYERS: Brauner Boegner, Nicholas Esqueda, Stephen Sherrill, Payte Rucker, Will Staples, Will Routhier, Antony Ramirez, Wes Childers, Fabian Hernandez, Jack Carroll
STRENGTHS: “The guys are a year older and we will have a very heavy junior/sophomore roster,” says Howell. “We have several guys coming back out that I feel will definitely add depth and quality of play for us that haven’t played in a few years.”

This team has the look of one that is young and inexperienced in many areas, but also return a handful of starters from last year. That includes leading goal-scorer Nicholas Esqueda, and top defensive player Payte Rucker. With a new voice over the program, it’s easy to see how this program might be able to take a step forward and compete for a playoff spot. At least, that’s the goal.
“Our goal is to compete in every match and make the state playoffs,” adds Howell. “How successful we are will come down to how fast our guys can play together as a unit and adjust to a new system. The guys have shown up for summer, weights, and have played some club ball in the fall. Returning a lot of guys that got varsity minutes last season so we are aiming to take the next step. There is a level of excitement and anticipation for the season to get under way.”
