Diamond Preview: Dawson County Tigers

Fresh off their first playoff trip since 2017, the Dawson County Tigers will look to build off last year’s success under new head coach and Dawson alum Logan Burt. Gone is longtime head coach Dwayne Sapp, who headed up the program from 2016-2022. Burt is himself no stranger to Dawson or BLITZ, as he is a BLITZ Hall of Famer who put up some 15 total wins and an ERA of 2.50. The lefty also hit 10 homers as a Tiger and was a standout at the plate and on the mound.

HEAD COACH: Logan Burt (1st Season)
2022 RECORD: 19-13; 3A State Round 1
RETURNING STARTERS: 7
KEY DEPARTURES: Brandon Cramer, Luke Mulberry, Nick Mullinax
KEY PLAYERS: Trey Harvey, Julian Horner, Colton Rucker, Sawyer Bearden, Davis Glass, Joshua Priest, Elijah Odom, Jacson Rickett, Banks Hickman, Chase Adams
STRENGTHS: “Pitching and defense will be a focus for us going into the year,” states Burt. “We return a majority of our
pitching from the previous year, so another year of experience should lead to us being strong on the mound.”

With Trey Harvey coming back after going 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA last season, to Burt’s point, the pitching is in good hands. Offensively, no doubt the trio of Brandon Cramer, Luke Mulberry, and Nick Mullinax will be missed. That group combined for 10 homers and 89 RBI last season, so that production will have to come from elsewhere. With 7 returning starters, that helps with having experience for sure. Only one of the 7 is a senior, so this team is still young.

“With a tough non-region schedule, we are challenging our guys to compete each game,” adds Burt. “Our region will be a tough one, so we are preparing our guys for the battles we will face late in the year with region matchups. There is an excitement inside the program for the challenges we will face, and we look to build off of last year’s experience.”
