Hoops Preview: Commerce Tigers

A new era begins for Commerce boys basketball as Sherrard Brantley takes over from coach Russ Gregg, who spearheaded the program from 2017-2022, and was the girls coach for several years before that. Brantley has a bevy of shooters at his disposal, and athleticism litters the lineup, so the Tigers appear to be in solid shape heading into the season.
HEAD COACH: Sherrard Brantley (1st Season)
2021-22 RECORD: 12-17, Region 8-A Public 3rd, 1A Public State Sweet 16
RETURNING STARTERS: 4. Cayden Lord, Jackson Morris, Jansen Morris, Mathew Simpson
KEY DEPARTURES: N/A
KEY PLAYERS: Lord, Morris, Morris, Simpson
OFFENSE: Sharp shooters Jackson Morris and Cayden Lord will lead a group that can put up points
STRENGTHS: Shooting (see above)
BIGGEST CHALLENGES: New region. With an athletic Elbert County team, a pair of Sweet 16 teams in Rabun County and Tallulah Falls, there won’t be an easy way to state in this region.

Point blank, the Tigers will need to find a way this season to win the close games. Granted, down the stretch last year, Commerce won the more meaninful games and got into the Sweet 16, but this year’s region makes for a smaller margin for error. Commerce has a great group of senior shooters, and specifically Cayden Lord and Jackson Morris will dictate how far this team can go.
