Week Two Scores & Recaps

There was a big-time top-10 showdown in Tiger against #2 Rabun and #9 Stephens, and #9 Jefferson looked to take frustrations out on an out-of-state opponent. That and much more. Here’s what went down in Week Two.

#2 Rabun County 14, #9 Stephens County 7

The Wildcats came from behind in the third after trailing 7-6 in a defensive battle. Keegan Stover’s 7-yd TD run and subsequent 2PC gave Rabun a 14-7 lead. Jaden Gibson sealed the win with an INT in the closing seconds. TJ Everett had the lone TD for Stephens County.

Habersham Central 42, White County 28

The Raiders won big, but had to pull away late. Ryan Fowler got the party started with a 7-yd TD run for the Warriors, though the XP failed. Caysen Duvall made it 13-0 on a 78-yd punt return for a score. Blandon Grizzle dominated in the run game though, getting Hab Central on the board with a 3-yd run late in the first. A Cooper Smith big pass set up Grizzle’s 9-yd TD run early in the second to make it a 14-13 Raiders lead. White County went ahead 21-14 when Noah Williams scored from 10 yards out, and Cam Wilson’s 2PC was good. Smith then found Canon Wilbanks for a 66-yd TD to tie the game with two minutes left in the half. Late in the third, Grizzle added a one-yard TD, though minutes later Tripp Nix scored from 22 out to tie it again at 28 apiece. It took just 20 seconds for Grizzle to score again, this time from 54 out to pull the Raiders ahead for good. Smith connected later in the fourth to Wilbanks for a 34-yd TD, capping the scoring. Grizzle had 4 TDs, and Smith had 2 TD passes, both to Wilbanks.

Lumpkin County 28, Union County 6

The Indians moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2011. Cooper Scott found Cal Faulkner for a 35-yd TD with 6:48 to go in the first, making it 7-0 in favor of Lumpkin. Harper Davenport had an early INT, and the defense forced a fumble in their own territory. Mason Sullens then got a 5-yd TD run to make it 14-0. A Scott short TD pass to Davenport late in the second made it 21-0, and the Panthers responded with a TD with just 40 seconds left in the second. The XP failed, making it a 21-6 game. That score held true to the fourth, and Scott had a 2-yd TD run to cap the scoring at 28-6, sealing the win with 4:44 to go.

#9 Jefferson 56, #3 Wren (SC) 28

Travis Noland got his first coaching win at Jefferson in a top-10 battle. Sammy Brown scored an early TD to set the tone, and Max Aldridge hit Elijah Dewitt for a TD to make it 14-0 in the first. Brown had another TD run in the second, and Aldridge-Dewitt connected on a 67-yd score to push it to 28-7 in the second. Vermarion Davis and Brown got another couple TD runs to advance the lead to 42-15 at the half. Brown’s 64-yd TD early in the third made it a no-doubter at 49-15, and Shontez Porter got in the end zone before the fourth.

Murphy (NC) 15, Commerce 14

The Tigers fell in a tight one 15-14 to Murphy. Tysean Wiggins’ second quarter TD from 5 yards out gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead, but Murphy got a TD and 2PC to make it 8-7 late in the third. Jaiden Daniels got the go-ahead TD on the first play of the final quarter to give Commerce the 14-8 lead, but Murphy went up for good with 7:48 left in the game and held on for the win.

Towns County 23, Lake Oconee County 0

The defense flexed well for Towns County, who pitched a shutout with a 16-0 win for the first of the 2022 season. The shutout was the first in Hiawassee for the Indians since 2008. TDs were scored by Seth Gillis, and two by Conner Chastain. Zion Calhoun kicked a 42-yd FG, and the defense was unbelievable with FOUR interceptions as a unit!

Lambert 49, Dawson County 6

This game was never in question, as a couple of Dom LeBlanc field goals is all the Tigers could manage in a brutal loss. Lambert took control early on with a flurry of TDs.
