Banks County, Commerce, and Stephens County were all in action in the Sweet 16. Here’s what went down!
The Tigers used a walkoff by Ryan Cooper to take a 6-5 win in the first game of the series. It polished off a 5-run final inning for a massive comeback. Unfortunately for Commerce, #8-ranked Irwin County rebounded with a monstrous 14-1 win to force a decisive game three. Game three left no doubt of who the better team was with a 9-1 Commerce win. The Tigers scored two in the second to take a quick lead, and scored another in the third and two more in the fourth. Coy Argo was masterful, as he went six innings of shutout ball, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Braxton Morris drove in a pair of runs, as did Coleson Smith through the first six. Brayton Purcell drove in four runs as the Tigers erupted for four in the sixth to get back in the Elite 8 for the third consecutive season (excluding 2020 COVID-shortened season).
#5-ranked Vidalia marched on with a 12-2 win in the opening game, followed by a 13-1 second game effort. That ends Banks County’s season in the Sweet 16.
The Indians, taking on #10-ranked Burke County, fell 7-1 in game one before forcing a do-or-die game three with a 5-1 victory in the second game. Burke County won 4-3 in the finale, a tough finish for Stephens County.
