Commerce finishes as runner-up in overtime state title game thriller

The Commerce Lady Tigers (21-2) straight up rolled through the season with dominance. The girls, led by coach Scott Tolbert and a pair of career 100-goal scorers in Ivy Tolbert and Chloe Diaz, took on Social Circle, the overall #1 ranked team in the state on Tuesday in the GHSA 1A Public State Championship.

Commerce, ranked #2 and losing their only two games all season to region rivals Social Circle, held a 3-2 advantage going into the break. Diaz got the scoring started with a goal in the first two minutes of play. Social Circle scored the equalizer in the 17th minute before Tolbert went off for a pair of goals at the 31st and 32nd minute. She scored both goals one minute and 46 seconds apart to give the Lady Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Social Circle got a pivotal goal back in the 38th minute just before the break. In the second half, SC equalized with about 20 minutes left in regulation to tie the game at three apiece. Diaz’s second goal came with just 12 minutes left in the match, giving Commerce the 4-3 cushion. However, Social Circled knotted the match with a goal within seven minutes to play, sending the game into overtime.

From there, SC scored twice to take the 6-4 win. Commerce ends the season at 21-2, falling only twice (both times to Social Circle). With nearly every playmaker coming back in 2023, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Commerce.
