State Playoff Elite 8: Monday Results

We started with 15 local programs in the postseason. 10 of those were still alive in Sweet 16. Now, only 6 compete in the Elite 8 this week. Below are the recaps as they happen. Commerce, Jefferson, and Towns girls all advanced to the Final Four!

GIRLS

#1 Union County Lady Panthers (12-4-1) 2, #1 Fitzgerald (15-0-1) 4

The Lady Panthers fell 4-2 in a tough loss at home. It was tied 2 apiece at the break, as Ariel McCarter tallied both goals for Union and Avery Murray had both assists. Fitzgerald scored two unanswered to grab the win in Blairsville, ending Union’s season.

#2 Jefferson Lady Dragons (13-3-1) 10, #1 Luella (15-5) 0

The Lady Dragons proved it wasn’t even close. A 10-0 win over Luella was complete domination on the road to advance to the Final Four.

#2 Commerce Lady Tigers (20-1) 10, #2 Claxton (8-9) 0

The Lady Tigers dropped another 10-spot on their opponents, reaching the state semifinals (Final Four) for the first time. Highlighting the action was Ivy Tolbert scoring her 100th goal on the season, as she is more than likely the national leader. Commerce gets win number 20 in the process.

#2 Lumpkin County Lady Indians (16-4-1) 0, #1 Oconee County (14-5) 2

Lumpkin fell in a top-10 matchup by a 2-0 final at Oconee County, ending the Lady Indians run in the Elite 8. The defense played incredible, but Oconee held Lumpkin’s offense at bay.

#3 Towns County Lady Indians (12-4) 1, #1 Ace Charter (8-10-2) 0

The #4-ranked Lady Indians love playing on the road! Towns County grabbed another 1-0 win, this time at ACE Charter, securing a spot in the Final Four. It was another sensational performance by the defense, and the lone goal was all Towns County would need.
