Game Of The Week: Jefferson vs Hapeville Charter

Our Game of the Week takes us back to Jefferson for the first time since the matchup between the Dragons and Southside, though we’ve had our “bonus” game at Jefferson since there for the region title tilt against North Oconee. Still, this is where the games matter most, and Dragon Nation should be there in full force for this one.

JEFFERSON

The Dragons, as well documented at this point, have yet to be healthy fully since even the first game of the year. Jordan Perry got hurt in the Rabun game and was out for a long time. Then Malaki Starks battled injuries, and missed several weeks. Sammy Brown has missed two straight games. However, Perry has been solid since returning. Starks is back and, even though he’s not 100%, he’s still playing at an elite level. If Brown returns for this one, that trio along with players like Kadin Bailey, Tre Reece and Reese Johnson help make this offense what it was intended to be all along.

HAPEVILLE CHARTER

The Hornets won a state title back in 2017 over Rabun County in Class 2A. They’ve moved up a couple of classifications, but are still a threat once in the playoffs. It’s been an up-and-down year, netting a 5-5 overall mark for Hapevillle, but they always have a few dudes that make any coach a little nervous.

OUR PREDICTION

Jefferson is much too battle-tested, well-coached, and talented to drop this game. That doesn’t mean it will be a blowout, but it shouldn’t really get too close. OUR PICK: Jefferson

DO WE BRING LUCK?

We’ve seen Jefferson play 14 games, and the Dragons have rewarded that with a 12-2 record.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

There’s not much to say here. These teams squared off a year ago in the second round of the playoffs, also at Memorial Stadium. We know how that one went. 35-0 win for the Dragons. These teams might not play each other again for many many years, as on Thursday Jefferson found out they’ll be moving up to 5A, while Hapeville will remain in 4A starting next year. Still, below is last year’s second-round matchup between these teams.
