Game Of The Week: Dawson County vs North Hall
Our Game of the Week takes us to Dawsonville for the first time since last year when the Tigers hosted White County. However, we did go to this exact Week 12 matchup in 2020 at North Hall, as this game is usually intense and has a lot on the line.
The Tigers if you recall opened the season sluggish at 0-3, scoring just 43 points in those games. Then something changed. Zach Holtzclaw began to find a favorite new target in Bailey Dameron, who has become one of the top pass-catchers in Class 3A. Dawson then won 4 in a row, including 3 region games, prior to a tough 21-14 loss to Cherokee Bluff. Dawson then rebounded with a 42-8 win over Lumpkin last week, clinching a state playoff spot. In the first 3 games, the Tigers averaged 14.3 points, but have averaged 40.5 since then.
The Trojans also secured a state playoff spot after going 4-0 in region before a 28-26 loss to Cherokee Bluff last week. That snapped a 5-game win streak for North Hall. While the offense has been fairly good all season, the defense has been arguably better, allowing more than 21 points just 3 times. Of course, Kevin Rochester, one of the state’s top rushers, is a force to be reckoned with on offense.

This is a very even matchup on paper. The offense and defense put up remarkably similar numbers. They say being at home comes with a 3 1/2 point advantage, so we’re going with the Tigers to pull one out here and clinch a home playoff game. OUR PICK: Dawson County
DO WE BRING LUCK?
In 17 games we’ve covered Dawson in, the Tigers have gone 10-7. That includes winning 5 of the last 6 that we’ve been to for them. We’ve actually seen this exact matchup 3 times before, with Dawson County winning 2 of them.

This “rivalry” as it has become is really not that old. First played in 2012, North Hall won the first two editions with Jeff Lee at Dawson and Bob Christmas at North Hall. Starting in 2016, it’s been Sid Maxwell against David Bishop, with Maxwell winning 3 straight from 2016-2018. The Trojans have won the last 2, including a 40-37 win in 2019 and a 34-21 win last season. The last 3 matchups are the only times the difference has been 14 or less.
