Banks, Dawson, Jefferson Sweet 16 bound! Union forces game 3
With 8 local programs playing in the state playoffs, we saw a gigantic upset along with a total of 3 local programs advancing to the Sweet 16 in the first day of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Union battles Wednesday in a win-or-go-home, and several others open up today in their series. Those whose season ended Tuesday include Habersham Central and Rabun County.
#1 BANKS COUNTY 2, #4 CORETTA SCOTT KING 0
The Lady Leopards (10-8) made mincemeat out of Coretta Scott King, winning 15-0 in 3 innings in game one, and again 18-0 in game two to advance to the next round, which again will be played at home.
#2 COMMERCE vs #3 ARMUCHEE
The Lady Tigers (17-6) finished as region runner-up, and host Armuchee (9-15-1). Commerce should take this first round quickly. Commerce has been to the postseason 5 years in a row now, and after last season’s runner-up finish at state, it’s a veteran group looking to win it all. This series begins on Wednesday.
#4 DAWSON COUNTY 2, #1 WESTMINSTER 0
The Lady Tigers (13-18) pulled off a David and Goliath type of upset. Dawson won its final two games in the region tournament to earn the 4th seed from 7-AAA, then came a road match at #1 powerhouse Westminster. The girls won 8-2 in the opener and 6-1 in the second game to clinch the series and advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2014.
#4 HABERSHAM CENTRAL 0, #1 POPE 2
The Lady Raiders (13-16) fell 9-0 in the first game of the series, and 12-1 in the finale to end their season in the first round of state.
#3 JEFFERSON 2, #2 ARABIA MOUNTAIN 0
The Lady Dragons (15-9) made quick work of Arabia Mountain, winning game one 16-4 and game two 12-4 to advance to the Sweet 16.
#4 RABUN COUNTY 0, #1 LOVETT 2
The Lady Wildcats (4-15) ran into a buzz saw that was Lovett. The home team took game one 9-5 in a tough battle before a 13-1 game two, series-winning game. This concludes Rabun’s season.
#3 UNION COUNTY 1, #2 PACE ACADEMY 1
Union County (10-9) took the opening game 7-4 over Pace Academy, and what followed was a crazy 21-13 final in favor of the home team. That evened the series, with Game 3 being played on Wednesday.
#3 WHITE COUNTY @ #2 SANDY CREEK
The Lady Warriors (21-5) are the best 3-seed in the state, hands down. This group limped in with a pair of losses in the region tournament, but all the goals are still there to do what has to be done. The bottom line is this team by all intents and purposes should end up in Columbus. Sandy Creek (15-6) is a solid team, but White County is the heavy favorite here. The Lady Warriors are now in the playoffs for a second year in a row, but looking to get past the first round for the first time since its 2010 state title run. In every run since (6 times not counting this year), the girls have been bounced in the first round. This series opens on Wednesday.
