Purple Hurricanes complete fourth quarter comeback, win top-10, unbeaten battle over Stephens [VIDEO]
The stage was set for Stephens County and Monroe Area, as both squared off in the Week 7 Region 8-AAA opener at The Reservation in a battle to top-10, unbeaten programs. The visiting Purple Hurricanes (6-0; 1-0 in 8-AAA) scored a pair of fourth quarter TDs to come back and beat the Indians (5-1; 0-1).
#6 Stephens County ignited the crowd early with a Cam Lacy interception on the opening drive of the game. Ben Stowe then connected with Corey Richie for a 46-yard TD to give the Indians an early 7-0 lead. #8-ranked Monroe retaliated with a 2-yard plunge by QB Selatian Slaughter. The extra point failed, leaving Stephens up 7-6 heading into the second.
A 25-yard field goal by Colton Bartmas extended the lead to 10-6, but the Purple Hurricanes orchestrated a pair of late first half scoring drives. Alan Jones, Jr. scored an 18-yard TD to give them a 13-10 lead, and in the final minute of the half, Slaughter’s 10-yard rushing TD made it 20-10.
The Indians came out firing, as Stowe hit Lacy with a 51-yard TD within the first few minutes of the third, which made it a brand new 20-17 ball game. The duo did it again with 1:28 to go in the third, only this time it was an 82-yard pitch and catch, as Lacy raced to the end zone for the 24-20 Stephens County lead.
Monroe Area weathered the storm, and scored the go-ahead TD with 10:55 to go in the game with a 7-yard Slaughter TD. He added another 1-yard TD with 2:55 to go to seal the deal and give the Hurricanes a 34-24 win. Slaughter tallied 4 rushing TDs, while Stowe had 3 TD passes. Lacy had a pair of TDs and an interception, collecting well over 150 receiving yards in the game.
