Game Of The Week: Stephens County vs Monroe Area

Our Game of the Week takes us over to The Reservation for a legit top-10 matchup that could very well decide who the Region Champion will be out of 8-AAA.

STEPHENS COUNTY

The Indians have rolled through the first half of their schedule. It started out with a 14-point win over White County. Then came the shocking 42-0 win over North Hall. Wins over Jackson County and the thriller over Madison put the Indians in a great position heading into their annual game against arch-rivals Hab Central. The result was a 35-18 win that put Stephens at 5-0 for the first time since 2007. With 4 teams int he region all ranked in the top 10, it’s expected to be a bloodbath from here on out as they all could beat up on each other. Make no doubt about it, the Indians are looking to be the top dog out of 8-AAA.

MONROE AREA

The Purple Hurricanes come in undefeated and ranked in the top 10 just like Stephens County. They bring to The Reservation a staunch defense that might be one of the best in Class 3A. That said, Monroe Area has not played anyone like Stephens County so far…

OUR PREDICTION

These two offenses know how to find the end zone, but the bigger picture here might be the defenses. We could see this one turn into a defensive battle that results in a low scoring output. The team that takes better care of the football should probably win this game. It’s not a given at all, but the home team should make the most of this being at home. OUR PICK: Stephens County

DO WE BRING LUCK?

It’s been mostly wins for Stephens County when we show up, as we’ve witnessed 19 games overall since 2009. In those contests, the Indians are 11-8, including 2-0 this season with wins we saw over North Hall and Habersham Central.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Is revenge in the cards for the Indians? They lost by 20 last season, albeit nothing about that season was normal for Stephens. Overall, the Indians have won 26 out of 39 in the all-time series that dates back to 1952. You can trace that back quite awhile. Monroe won the first 3 all-time meetings before Stephens reeled off a 6-0-1 record from 1955 until 1973. The Purple Hurricanes took 4 out of 6 from 1974-1985. Then came dominance from the Indians, as they took 16 of the next 18 from 1986 thru 2007. Monroe Area has now taken 3 of the last 5. Stephens has notched 8 shutouts in the series, while Monroe has collected 4.
