There’s now an official term for seniors who earned an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who stick it out and use that extra year are referred to as ‘Super Seniors.’ Dontae Wilson, who’s already had a super career, is set for his best one yet in 2021.

The Jefferson 2017 grad made an immediate impact at Georgia State, registering 4 sacks in 2017, which at the time was one shy of the Panthers’ single-season record. He finished that freshman year with 24 tackles (5 for loss), 4 sacks, and a forced fumble. That freshman year he helped guide Georgia State to an AutoNation Cure Bowl win over Western Kentucky. That really set the tone for his collegiate career.

The 2018 season saw Wilson earn the starting job at noseguard, where he tallied 30 tackles (4 for loss), and 1.5 sacks. His junior 2019 season was arguably his best to date – 49 tackles (7 for loss), 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. He earned All-Sun Belt Conference Honorable Mention recognition that year, having his first 10-tackle game against Army.

Wilson followed that season up with a solid 2020 year. Despite the season being surrounded by the COVID threat, Wilson still managed 27 tackles (3.5 for loss) and a fumble recovery, and he was named a team captain and Third-Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. He missed 2 games that season due to injury, which probably helped him in deciding to come back for one more go around.

So far in his Super Senior year, Wilson has 11 tackles (2 for loss), 0.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. He is fourth in Georgia State history with 9 sacks and sixth with 21.5 tackles for loss currently. In total, his stats include 141 tackles (21.5 for loss), 9 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and 3 QB hurries.

Wilson was a 2-time All-State defensive lineman for the Jefferson Dragons, and was the 2016 Region Player of the Year after collecting 74 tackles (14 TFL) and 6 sacks. He was a 3-time All-Region selection.
