Cats extinguish Blue Flame with 35-point first quarter [VIDEO]
In typical Rabun County fashion, the opposition stayed in the game for almost no time at all. Gunner Stockton had 7 total TD and Lang Windham had 4 scores as the Wildcats ran away in a 70-14 final in Tiger over visiting Pickens (SC).
The #1-ranked Wildcats (4-1) were all over the Blue Flame (2-3) early and often, and scored on all 10 of their true drives. The only two times Rabun didn’t score was a long field goal attempt just before the half and when running out the clock in the final seconds. It was a 35-point third quarter that sealed the win.
Windham drew first blood with an 11-yard rushing TD less than 2 minutes into the game. Pickens responded with a long drive that ended in a game-tying TD. Stockton then found a wide open Jaden Gibson for a 30-yard TD to take the lead for good with 1:39 to go in the first. It was the first of 6 TD passes for Stockton, tying a career high he’s hit many times.
He threw TDs to 5 different receivers, including Ethan Clarke in the second quarter on a 55-yard passing play. That made it 21-7, and an 81-yard screen pass that turned into much more by Windham gave Rabun a commanding 28-7 lead. The defense made multiple third and fourth down stops, recovering a pair of fumbles, making stops in the backfield, and a timely interception by Will Turpin.
Windham picked up right where he left off to open the third. After recovering a fumble, Windham scored on a 28-yard burst. Stockton then had a 12-yard TD pass to Tate Ramey, ran in an 11-yard TD on his lone carry of the game, and threw a pair of TDs to Baxley O’Brien for 6 yards and 28 to make it 63-7 heading into the final quarter.
With a running clock, Garrett Horton led a drive that ended with a 4-yard Windham rushing TD to give the Cats a rare 70-point performance. Windham finished with 111 rushing yards and 3 TD, adding 81 receiving with another TD. Stockton finished with 350 yards on 16-for-18 passing and 6 TD, adding the 11-yard rushing TD. Clarke had 137 receiving yards and a TD, O’Brien had 80 yards and 2 TD, Gibson had 63 yards and a score, Ramey had 32 and a score, and Windham with his 81 and TD. Turpin finished with 14 tackles, a fumble recovery, forced fumble, and the interception.
