Week Five Power Rankings

Week Five was a little light on the games played, but still gave us some more clarity on what the local scene is. Here are the BLITZ Week Five Power Rankings!

#1 » JEFFERSON

RECORD: 4-0
LAST GAME:
BYE
NEXT GAME: vs #4 Flowery Branch
PREVIOUS RANKING: #1

The Dragons rested up with a well-earned off week, and now prep for their last major competitor on the schedule in #4 Flowery Branch. Right now, it’s been proven that no one can stop Sammy Brown and Malaki Starks, as well as Kadin Bailey. Sky’s the limit for Jefferson.

#2 » RABUN COUNTY

RECORD: 3-1
LAST GAME:
W 63-7 @ #3 Saluda (SC)
NEXT GAME: vs Pickens (SC)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #2

The Cats blew out #3 Saluda after throttling #1 Murphy the week prior. The boys are firing on all cylinders. Next up, a 2-2 Pickens team that must travel into Tiger for this matchup. Should be a similar result for Gunner Stockton and company.

#3 » STEPHENS COUNTY

RECORD: 5-0
LAST GAME:
W 35-18 @ Habersham Central
NEXT GAME: BYE
PREVIOUS RANKING: #3

The Indians handled Habersham Central, though it took a huge third quarter effort to complete the deal. The result is a 5-0 start for the Indians for the first time since 2007, when Stephens County went a perfect 10-0 in the regular season and 11-0 counting the playoffs before falling in the second round. Cam’ron Lacy and Ben Stowe have led the offense this season, though plenty of players deserve the credit for this hot start.

#4 » TOWNS COUNTY

RECORD: 3-1
LAST GAME:
W 38-17 vs Lakeview
NEXT GAME: @ Bethlehem Christian
PREVIOUS RANKING: #5

The Indians move as high up as they’ve ever been in BLITZ history in our Power Rankings. It’s well-deserved, as the program hasn’t had a 3-1 start since 2008, when Towns went on to a 7-win season. This next matchup was a win last season, but this year Bethlehem Christian is 5-0 heading in. This will be a great test for the Indians.

#5 » HABERSHAM CENTRAL

RECORD: 2-2
LAST GAME:
L 18-35 vs #4 Stephens County
NEXT GAME: vs Winder Barrow
PREVIOUS RANKING: #4

The Raiders slide back a spot after a deflating loss to archrivals Stephens County. Simarcus Burney did have his best game yet. If Habersham can cut back on the turnovers (4 against Stephens), they’ll be just fine as they hit region play. Winder is a great opportunity to get off to a 1-0 start in the part of the season that matters most.

#6 » WHITE COUNTY

RECORD: 1-3
LAST GAME:
BYE
NEXT GAME: vs Dawson County
PREVIOUS RANKING: #6

A bye week for White County was great timing to regroup. There is a lot of inconsistency at QB with the cycling in and out of Billy Carder and Tripp Nix, as well as Wildcat formation with Silas Mulligan. All 3 have done well at times, but the passing game hasn’t opened things up as much. Mulligan and Darius Cannon continue to carry a lot of weight on their shoulders as White County seeks to start off region play against a similarly-struggling Dawson program.

#7 » DAWSON COUNTY

RECORD: 1-3
LAST GAME:
BYE
NEXT GAME: @ White County
PREVIOUS RANKING: #7

Dawson also had a bye week, but theirs came after a pivotal win to give the Tigers some confidence and momentum. Now rested, they’ll travel to White County in what will give one team a great edge on a playoff path, while the other will be left with no room for error the rest of the way. Look out for Zach Holtzclaw, as he had his best game of the season in the win over Northview.

#8 » COMMERCE

RECORD: 1-2
LAST GAME:
BYE
NEXT GAME:
PREVIOUS RANKING: #8

It was a bye week to really seek to find answers about itself for Commerce. The Tigers have a chance to turn it around as so much lies ahead of them. However, it’s going to take some wrinkles in the offense to get it going. Dreylan Martin and Malachi Shockey have combined for 400 yards and 64% of the carries. Mt. Paran won’t be easy, but Commerce could use this one.

#9 » BANKS COUNTY

RECORD: 1-3
LAST GAME:
L 13-30 vs Fannin County
NEXT GAME: @ Haralson County
PREVIOUS RANKING: #9

The Leopards got stumped by Fannin County, and now must put that behind them for one final tune-up before region play. Haralson is a top-10 ranked team, so the Leopards might care more about improving themselves rather than the end result.

#10 » LUMPKIN COUNTY

RECORD: 1-3
LAST GAME:
W 34-14 vs St. Francis
NEXT GAME: BYE
PREVIOUS RANKING: #11

Lumpkin did it! The Indians finally put a program-worst 19 straight losses behind them. That’s the first step for this program to begin to build to what’s next. After a well-earned bye week, it’s Gilmer at home to open region play. Getting a region win before the season is over should be the goal for Lumpkin.

#11 » UNION COUNTY

RECORD: 0-3
LAST GAME:
L 7-45 @ Pickens
NEXT GAME: vs #1 Murphy (NC)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #10

It was bad for Union at Pickens in Week Five, and unfortunately, #1 Murphy rolls into town. The Panthers still seek win number one for Michael Perry.
