Cathcart, Ray make history with 150 wins together
You don’t see too many head coaches get to 150 career wins. That number comes with time, sustained success, and the blessing of great athletes and great assistant coaches around you.
Coach Gene Cathcart recently hit career win number 150 when the Jefferson Dragons beat #1-ranked Rabun County to open the season. A couple of weeks later, when Jefferson took a Week 3 win over Southside (SC), the milestone also came for senior associate coach Ken Ray.
The duo of Cathcart and Ray shared the victory, as the pair have been together since Cathcart’s reign over the Habersham Central football program.
“Ken has been my Associate Head Coach at four places, and we have won a state championship, 3 state runner-ups, made four Final Fours, six Elite Eights, and 10 region championships,” states Cathcart.
To the head coach’s point, the duo has coached at four stops – Habersham Central, Greenwood, Seneca, and now Jefferson. Those stops can be broken down as such:
- Habersham Central (2004-2008): 38-19
- Greenwood (2009-2013): 58-12
- Seneca (2014): 9-3
- Jefferson (2017-Present): 45-9
Cathcart himself coached at Habersham from 2003, and Ray joined him in 2004. Not many head coaches have the blessing of having the same associate head coach for so many years.
“Not many assistant coaches who are that gifted, nor that loyal,” says Cathcart. “He is special. Only been one year without him. They don’t come any better than that guy.”
