Jefferson Fends Off Rabun In Battle Of Number Ones [VIDEO]
Sometimes games live up to the hype. That was certainly the case in Week 1, when the #1 Jefferson Dragons overcame a 7-0 deficit and scored 22 straight to hold off the #1 Rabun County Wildcats in a 22-13 slugfest.
The game featured more than an hour’s delay due to lightning, which came after a Sammy Brown 78-yard TD run that tied the game at 7 in the closing seconds of the first quarter. Rabun’s defense pitched a second-half shutout, but it wasn’t enough as the Dragons’ defense held strong as well.
Rabun County scored on its opening drive, as Gunner Stockton mixed in some runs with solid connections with receivers Tate Ramey, Ethan Clarke, and Jaden Gibson. Stockton ran in his first senior year TD from a yard out with 1:40 to go in the first.
Seconds later, Brown’s 78-yard TD run electrified the crowd and promptly invited the lightning. Both teams headed to the locker room for more than an hour before play resumed. Jefferson continued to get a short field, and made it work to its advantage. Kadin Bailey had a 4-yard TD run to make it 15-7 following a 2-point conversion with 2:22 left in the half. Malaki Starks added his own TD, from 13 yards out, pushing the lead to 22-7 with 9 seconds left before the half.
The Cats made adjustments on defense, and took advantage of multiple fumbles. Stockton threw a 12-yard TD pass to Turner Grimmett to bridge the gap and make it a 22-13 game. Stockton and Rabun were in the red zone late in the fourth, but turned it over on downs. Jefferson ran out the clock to secure the win.
The Dragons are now 1-0 on the season and the Wildcats are 0-1. The win also proved to be #150 for coach Gene Cathcart.
