Gridiron Preview 2021: Commerce

It’s officially a new era for Commerce football. Gone is Michael Brown to nearby Jefferson, as well as his son and All-State RB Sammy Brown. Also departing is starting QB Trey Huff for another program, and the usual senior standouts who graduated. However, a pair of move-ins may help keep this program atop the region under new head coach Mark Hollars. It’s now a streak of 24 consecutive seasons of making the state playoffs, and that streak should continue to grow even as the Tigers turn the page to a new chapter.

Head Coach: Mark Hollars, 1st Season
2020 Record:
11-2; Quarterfinals; Region 8-A Champions; #3 State Ranking

“We expect to represent the great tradition of Commerce football,” says Hollars.

Personnel & Schemes

Key Departures: Sammy Brown (transferred to Jefferson), Trey Huff (transferred to Lincoln County), Tyelon Brock, Bo Childers, Hunter Nunn, Michael Sherman

Key Returning Players: Dreylan Martin, Mason Gaddis, Trey Garnto, Lambdin Hardy, Collin Hall, Landon Worley

There are some key losses to this Quarterfinals team, starting with key seniors and stud sophomore RB Sammy Brown (leaves for Jefferson) as well as Trey Huff (junior transfer to Lincoln). However, Jaiden Daniels stands to contribute from day one as a freshman (came from Banks), and Landon Bunn has a shot to claim the QB position as a senior coming over from Jackson County (prior to Jackson played for Commerce). Returning Dreylan Martin is HUGE for the offense as well, and Mason Gaddis will be the anchor on the line.

Up & Coming Players: Jaiden Dainels (FR transfer from Banks), Landon Bunn (Commerce native who returns after a year at Jackson County)

Offense: Flexbone. The starting QB has officially not been named, according to Hollars. Though Bunn will likely get every opportunity to win the job, as well as fellow senior Trey Garnto. Dreylan Martin will be the featured back, but others like Jaiden Daniels will probably get big-time reps.

Defense: Slant 50. Collin Hall, Dreylan Martin, and Lambdin Hardy will be the key names you’ll see on the defensive side of the ball.

Line: “Inexperienced group, but hungry to prove themselves,” says Hollars. Mason Gaddis, Hampton Hutto, and Lambdin Hardy anchor the OL.

Strengths & Areas of Focus

Strengths: “Commitment of players,” says Hollars. “Our work ethic is excellent and the players are strong.”

Focusing On: “We have spent our summer working to implement our new program and getting players and players acclimated to one another,” adds Hollars.
