BLITZ Track & Field Athlete of the Year – Malaki Starks

From the gridiron to the track, Malaki Starks proved to be a BEAST in 2020-21! His athleticism was on full display this spring, as he is named our BLITZ Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • 4X State Qualifier
  • Long Jump – Region Champ & State Champ
  • 100 M – Region Champ & State 5th
  • 200 M – Region Champ & State Qualifier
  • 4×100 Relay – Region Champ & State Runner-Up

Starks has an outstanding performance at the state championships, winning the title in the long jump. He also finished 5th in the 100, was a qualifier in the 200, and earned a state runner-up finish in the 4×100 Relay. He was a region champ in all 4 events.

Starks edged out nearby athlete Brandon Martin for the honors, as he took 6 out of 13 1st-place votes. Martin had 4 such votes and Tallulah’s Grey Bourlet had 2 and Banks’ Ledford one.

Voting included our 13-person panel made up of sports reporters, writers, video producers, former coaches, players, GHSA officials, and sports experts. The voting is Heisman-style, with the following points system:
1st place votes: 5 pts; 2nd: 3 pts; 3rd: 2 pts; 4th: 1 pts; 5th-6th: 0.5 pts; 7th-8th: 0.25 pts

Starks makes the second Jefferson athlete to earn the hardware, following Eli Morris a couple of years ago. He’s the fifth winner who is competes in sprinter events.

WHO WILL WIN IT NEXT YEAR?

With only Starks and Banks’ Ledford coming back next year as returning finalists, it could be up for the taking. The unknown is whether 5-star UGA commit Starks will even be at Jefferson by spring, as he might very well enroll early at UGA as is typical for guys of his status. Never fear, there are plenty of local athletes who can make a serious run at this, including guys like Evan Prince (Tallulah Falls).
