Lumpkin’s Caldwell, Towns’ McTaggart tabbed Players of the Week

With very few teams making it to the state semifinals (3 to be exact) in our area, we took the honor of selecting the most outstanding boy and girl in the deep rounds of state. Congrats to Lumpkin’s Makenzie Caldwell and Towns’ Jake McTaggart on being named the final Players of the Week for the 2020-21 season.

Lumpkin County made a sensational run that ended in a heartbreaker on a buzzer-beater to Cross Creek. The girls were within 5.8 seconds from making the state finals, and senior Makenzie Caldwell was absolutely pivotal throughout the season. In particular, the second half in the semifinals, where she had 10 points and hauled in rebound after rebound, played her heart out, and drilled a pair of clutch 3-pointers. For the quarterfinals and semifinals, the forward had 20 points, 12 rebounds, 11 steals, and 10 deflections. She picks up her first POW award.

Towns County junior Jake McTaggart has become quite the legend in Indians history. He’s come up big time after time in the playoffs, and guided the #1-ranked Indians to the state finals with a 21-point, 11-rebound, 5-block performance in the semifinals! This is his second straight POW award.
