Baseball Power Rankings – March
Not much has truly transpired in 2021, and it’s not because of COVID. The weather has to this point wreaked havoc on many team’s schedules early on, but we’ve still got a few games under our belt.
DISCLAIMER – some teams we just don’t have much to ride on, like Towns or Tallulah Falls, both of whom have played only a couple/few games.
RECORD: 4-2 (0-0 in 8-AAAA)
The Dragons are the new #1 in our Power Rankings. They earned that distinction with a #4 state ranking in Class 4A, and already a pair of wins over rivals, #6 Commerce. Coach Tommy Knight and his group are fresh off a win, and are seeking a region championship and much more this season.
RECORD: 3-2 (1-0 in 8-A Public)
The Tigers are off to a solid start, with the sole losses coming to our #1 Jefferson. Commerce itself is ranked #6 in Class 1A Public, and have won two games in a row coming into this week.
#3 BANKS COUNTY
RECORD: 2-4 (0-0 in 8-AA)
The Leopards are still good…ignore the record, as they have played some tough teams in non-region action. #6 Commerce is one of those in which they narrowly lost. Banks County is ranked #8 in Class 2A, and though it’s on a 3-game slide, the light at the end of the tunnel is there.
#4 DAWSON COUNTY
RECORD: 4-2 (0-0 in 7-AAA)
The Tigers got out of the gate slowly to an 0-2 start, but have since rebounded with a 4-game win streak. That included a monumental 500th career win for coach Dwayne Sapp!
#5 STEPHENS COUNTY
RECORD: 4-4 (0-0 in 8-AAA)
The Indians have A LOT of new guys starting to step up, and though they have lost a couple in a row recently, are looking to be a tough out.
#6 WHITE COUNTY
RECORD: 3-3 (0-0 in 7-AAA)
The Warriors have just reeled off 2 straight wins, and appear to be in good shape ahead of region play.
#7 HABERSHAM CENTRAL
RECORD: 2-4 (1-0 in 8-AAAAAA)
The Raiders got back on the winning track with a win, and are already 1-0 in region play.
#8 LUMPKIN COUNTY
RECORD: 3-3 (0-0 in 7-AAA)
The Indians have been fairly successful so far with a 3-3 mark overall, which includes a win over Union County.
#9 UNION COUNTY
The Power Ranking is sure to be as low as these guys get. The loss to Lumpkin sort of pits them here, but they have arguably the best pitcher statistically at least in Zeke Swartz, who has been ridiculously good. A pair of losses in a row has them here.
#10 RABUN COUNTY
RECORD: 2-2 (0-0 in 8-AA)
The Cats move up a couple of spots after getting a win over Tallulah Falls in the season-opener and another win to even their record at 2 apiece.
#11 TALLULAH FALLS
RECORD: 1-1 (0-0 in 8-A Private)
The Indians are ONLY here right now because they have played two games going into Tuesday. More games means they will more than likely rise up the rankings.
#12 TOWNS COUNTY
RECORD: 1-3 (0-0 in 8-A Public)
The Indians of Towns County are similarly only here for a sole reason – nearly all of the team is still playing basketball, as that group is in the Elite 8 this week. When those playmakers like Aidan Berrong get back on the diamond, this team might come closer to its #3 ranking we had from the preseason. This is not a slight on this team, just reality that most of their team isn’t playing yet.
