McTaggart leads Towns County to first Elite 8 as Indians lead from wire to wire [VIDEO]

The #2-ranked Indians (22-3) never trailed from start to finish, going up by as many as 14 points on the way to a 77-67 win on Saturday night in Hiawassee to reach their first-ever Elite 8. Towns County held a 3-point heavy Warren County (12-5) team at bay, though the visitors pulled within 7 in the closing minutes to make things interesting.

Jake McTaggart did much of the heavy lifting, dropping in 26 points, including 18 in the second half. He and Kolby Moss and Aidan Berrong combined for 58 points in the win.

Towns went on an opening 8-0 run as the Screaming Devils couldn’t buy a bucket early on. That sparked a timeout. Warren came out of the timeout connecting on a few long distance shots. Their first 15 points came on the 3-ball, though Warren County didn’t get their first bucket until 2:04 left in the first. As they looked to perhaps take a share of the lead, down 12-9 with the final seconds ticking off and the ball, a bad pass was picked off and heaved from mid-court by Hayden McClure. The buzzer-beating triple sent the arena into an uproar, as Towns led 15-9 after the first.

Both teams traded blows in the second, as Warren pulled within 16-15 early in the quarter before Towns County went on a 7-0 run to create some separation. Towns held a 34-28 advantage at the break. Berrong hit a clutch 3-pointer from far beyond the arc in the third quarter to give the Indians a comfortable gap of 43-31. That led to a 51-40 lead going into the final quarter.

Towns led by 14 in the third and fourth before the Screaming Devils raced back to within 7 a couple of times. McTaggart slammed home a dunk to ignite the crowd, while Berrong, Moss, and McTaggart all shot nearly perfect from the free throw line down the stretch to put the game on ice.

McTaggart led with his 26 points, while Moss had 19 and Berrong 13. Berrong had 10 in the second half while Moss had 13 in that same span. McClure finished with 8 points, while Collin Crowder had 7 and 2 each for Colton Day and Kyle Oakes.

The Indians will play in the 1A Quarterfinals at Irwin County either Tuesday or Wednesday.
