Quarterfinal Bound: Dragon Firepower Too much for Hornets [VIDEO]

The Jefferson Dragons used a monster first half en route to a 35-0 win Friday night over visiting Hapeville Charter in the second round of the playoffs, punching a ticket to the Class 4A Quarterfinals. It was slow going at first as the Hornets played keep away and drained the clock, but Jefferson scored a pair of second quarter TDs 50 seconds apart to pull away.

The #1-ranked Dragons (12-0) used a Malaki Starks 32-yd rushing TD in the first quarter as part of the opening drive for Jefferson. The extra point failed, leaving JHS up 6-0. Hapeville had taken the opening drive into Jefferson territory and about half the first quarter clock with it. The Dragons defense didn’t give in though, turning away the Hornets time and again.

#9-ranked Hapeville (7-3) had big-time recruits in Zavier Carter (5*) and Nick Hunter (4*), but they hadn’t seen an offense like the Dragons, which ranks tops in Class 4A. With 4:45 to go in the first half, Jefferson’s Starks pitched the ball as he was being taken down, leading to a reverse TD for Spencer Neese from 18 yards out. Paxton Corkery’s 2-point rushing attempt was good, pushing the lead to 14-0.

Moments later, 50 seconds to be exact, Hapeville had a bad punt snap, which was scooped up at the five and taken in by Max Aldridge for the 21-0 Dragons lead. Rem Maxwell had a beautiful punt return for a 65-yd TD called back due to a penalty, but Jefferson found itself up 21-0 at the break.

That lead ballooned to 28-0 on the opening drive of the third, when Corkery took a 34-yd run all the way to the end zone, dragging defenders the final 5-10 yards. Later in the third, Starks hit Neese on a huge passing play to set up at the 2-yard line. Starks took it in on the next play for the 35-0 lead, capping the scoring.

Jefferson’s 35-0 win comes on the heels of a 65-0 win in the opening round against Mt. Zion, which brings the playoff scoring to 100-0 exactly through two games.
