Playoff Slates – Brackets Released for 2020 Playoffs

With the conclusion of the regular season comes the bracketology – the draw of who plays who in the state playoffs. Here are the first round matchups for our playoff-bound teams.

#1 Jefferson vs #4 Mt. Zion

The Dragons play host to Mt. Zion, which should be one of their easiest games of the season. The more intriguing matchup would be in the second round against likely opponent Hapeville Charter, the 2017 Class 2A Champions.

#1 Rabun County vs #4 Haralson County

Should be an easy first round opponent for Rabun, who narrowly missed having yet another undefeated regular season.

#1 Commerce vs #4 Manchester

The Tigers are region champions, and have what should be a fairly easy draw with Manchester.

#3 Dawson County @ #2 Adairsville

Dawson County is set to play Adairsville in the opening round, which is actually a better draw than if the Tigers had been region runner-up and would have run into GAC in a second round matchup.

#3 Habersham Central @ #2 Rome (PROJECTED)

This one is not actually set in stone. If the Raiders lose Saturday to Shiloh, and Lanier gets beat by Winder-Barrow, Habersham would be in a three-way tie for fourth in the region. Both of those things have to happen to get there. More than likely, Habersham ends up as a 3-seed traveling to Rome.

#3 Union County @ #2 Heard County

The Panthers have a shot to upset Heard County if they can find more consistency on offense. A team that for the better part of a decade have had plenty of it, it’s eluded them this season.

#4 Banks County @ #1 Callaway

This will be an unfortunate draw for the Leopards, who finished the regular season 1-9. Still, they have to be excited for the opportunity.

#4 White County @ #1 Rockmart

The Warriors were the only team to beat #9-ranked and Region Champs Cherokee Bluff. Still, it’s a #4 seed for White County and a trip to Rockmart to open the playoffs.

#4 Stephens County @ #1 GAC (in Bracket FRI, no longer in Bracket SAT)

The Indians almost snuck in despite missing a pair of games due to COVID issues. A win over East Jackson was their only region win, and late Friday night GHSA had them in the bracket. Checking back Saturday, they were no longer in.

THE OTHERS

#1 Buford vs #4 Douglas County
#1 Cherokee Bluff vs #4 Lafayette
#2 Flowery Branch vs #3 Luella
#2 North Hall vs #3 North Murray
#2 Denmark vs #3 Discovery
#3 Gainesville @ #2 Archer
#3 Hart County @ Carver, Atlanta
#3 Lakeview @ #2 North Cobb Christian

  • How did Stephens county (Toccoa) make the playoffs

  • Habersham would play Rome as a 3 seed since Hab is in Region 8. How does Stephens go to the playoffs over Franklin, who beat them head to head?

    • Yeah good catch. Rome is right. GHSA allowed regions to determine this year on how to do playoffs. Some regions had a point system, some took an auto loss or win on covid cancelations, and some voted to determine after who should go in the playoffs. I’m not entirely sure what direction 8-AAA went in. But as of last night, GHSA had Stephens in the playoffs, despite missing 2 games and beating only East Jackson in region play
