Game of the Week: Rabun County vs Union County

Our Game of the Week sends us to Tiger for what will prove as a Region Championship game for Rabun, and the chance for Union – if it can pull off a monumental upset – to force a 3-way tie in 8-AA.

RABUN COUNTY

Rabun County comes in seeking its SEVENTH straight region title. The #1-ranked Wildcats are now 8-1, and have the state’s highest-scoring offense at 49.3 points per contest. Gunner Stockton is now 7th all-time in the state in passing scores (109), and needs just 4 more to tie, and 5 to pass, former Rabun great Bailey Fisher. That could happen tonight. Stockton’s 8,375 career passing yards also now has him at 15th all-time. Rabun is coming off a 6th straight victory, and have won its past two games 71-0 and 63-7.

UNION COUNTY

The Panthers have had a season that has been complicated by re-scheduled dates due to COVID issues. Union County recently fell 21-6 to Rabun Gap, falling to 3-4 on the season. The Panthers are now 1-1 in region play. The recent return of Jonah Daniel from an injury that sidelined him for 6-8 weeks definitely helps, though he’s still working his way back to where he was prior to that. Logan Helcher continues to also seek consistency at QB.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

This rivalry runs DEEP, and as of late, it’s almost always meant (and will this year) determining the region champion. That never gets old. So here we are. 53 all-time meetings, and Rabun has won 37 of them going back to 1958. The Cats won the first 9 games ever, and 20 of the first 25. Since 2012, it’s been all Rabun, winning 6 in a row and looking to make it SEVEN in a row over Union. Counting this meeting, the past 5 have determined the region champion! Below are the versions of this rivalry we’ve been on hand for:

2014: Rabun County 45, #10 Union County 31 | 2015: #5 Rabun County 49, #6 Union County 3
2018: #2 Rabun County 56, #9 Union County 28 | 2019: #1 Rabun County 49, #6 Union County 7
