Stockton TD Pass to Clark in Final Minutes gives Rabun Thrilling Win [VIDEO]
With the whole nation watching, Gunner Stockton put on a clinic with five touchdowns, including a 32-yard corner end zone fade to Adriel Clark that gave the Wildcats a last-minute thrilling 38-31 win.
The game had everything you could want. #1 Rabun County and #2 Prince Avenue Christian squaring off for the first time ever. The nation’s top QBs in Brock Vandagriff (Class of 2021, UGA commit) and Gunner Stockton (Class of 2022, South Carolina commit). 220 touchdowns between the two 5-star quarterbacks.
Rabun raised everyone’s blood pressure in Frank Snyder Memorial Stadium after seeing a 31-7 third quarter lead end up as a 31-31 ball game with two minutes to go, as Vandagriff and the Wolverines put up 24 unanswered points. The Stockton-to-Clark TD gave Rabun the go-ahead with 2:19 left, and moments later Cory Keller secured victory with his second interception of the game.
Rabun (2-0) got on the board first with a 31-yard TD from Stockton to Clark late in the first quarter. Stockton then lit up the crowd with a 45-yard TD run in which he backpedaled the final five yards into the end zone to give the Cats a 14-0 lead after one.
Vandagriff connected with a streaking, wide open Zac Dyer for a 43-yard score to cut the deficit in half. But Stockton and company responded about midway through the second with a 2-yard rushing score for Stockton. Vandagriff was then intercepted with 19 seconds to go in the half by Hunter Moore. That led to a 28-yard field goal at the horn by Cesar Armenta, as Rabun County held a steady 24-7 lead going into the break.
The game appeared to be in the bag for the Cats when the opening drive of the second half saw Keller pull down a Vandagriff pass, which led to a 54-yard TD run for Stockton, his third rushing score of the night. That put Rabun up 31-7, but chaos quickly showed up.
Vandagriff got a quick TD on a 14-yard pass to Logan Johnson, and after a Stockton tipped interception gave Prince Avenue a short field, Vandagriff connected with Johnson from 17-yards out. There was less than two minutes between the two scores, and made it a 31-21 game. Just before the fourth quarter, the Wolverines knocked home a 1-yard TD by Landon Owens, which followed a long pass play from Vandagriff to Johnson. Suddenly, a 24-point lead for the Cats was down to 3.
Both teams had stalled drives before PAC drove down and nailed a 47-yard field goal to tie the game at 31 apiece. Stockton and the offense, with 4:32 on the clock, orchestrated a winning drive to go ahead. Stockton connected three times with Clark, including on pivotal third downs prior to the game-winning score.
Still with 2:19 to try for a tie, Vandagriff was intercepted again by Keller, who slid down to give Rabun the ball back with just over a minute to go. Stockton ran a couple of plays before taking a knee for the hard-earned 38-31 win.
Stockton had 173 passing yards and 2 TD, and 173 rushing yards and 3 TD. He eclipsed 2,000 career yards rushing in the game, and now has 122 career touchdowns.
Rabun County moves to 2-0 on the young season, while Prince Avenue is now 1-1. The Wildcats are home again next week when hosting another #2-ranked team in Jefferson.
