Football Power Rankings – Week One

We got the first week of football in on September 4. It gave us some clarity on our initial power rankings, and for that we bring your our Week One edition of the Power Rankings!

#1 RABUN COUNTY

LAST RANK: #1
RECORD: 1-0 (0-0)
LAST: W 35-0 @ Ridgeland
NEXT: vs #3 Prince Avenue Christian

The #1-ranked Wildcats didn’t necessarily surprise with a Week 1 blowout at Ridgeland. A road shutout was a nice surprise though, and while Gunner Stockton did his normal thing, the bigger surprise was running back Lang Windham. This marks the third year in a row we’ve seen a feature back (Brody Jarrard, Cory Keller, Windham) emerge unexpectedly. All three of those guys are still on the team, and with the way Gunner spread the ball to many receivers, this could be the best Rabun team yet with so many playmakers.

#2 JEFFERSON

LAST RANK: #2
RECORD: 0-0 (0-0)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: vs Central Gwinnett

The Dragons are ranked #2, and had a bye week to start the year in preparing for Central Gwinnett. All eyes will be on how Jefferson utilizes 5-start athlete Malaki Starks.

#3 WHITE COUNTY

LAST RANK: #4
RECORD: 1-0 (0-0)
LAST: W 44-6 vs Stephens County
NEXT: @ #7 Hart County

Everything clicked for the Warriors in the season opener, as J Ben Haynes had a career night. Now it’s turning the page to a state-ranked program, and going on the road. This will tell a lot about this team.

#4 COMMERCE

LAST RANK: #5
RECORD: 1-0 (0-0)
LAST: W 41-18 @ Banks County
NEXT: vs Union County

The #8-ranked Tigers had almost no trouble with Banks County, and will look to go to 2-0 when hosting Union County this week. The emergence of freshman Sammy Brown could be a sign of great things to come for Commerce.

#5 DAWSON COUNTY

LAST RANK: #3
RECORD: 0-1 (0-0)
LAST: L 7-23 @ Cass
NEXT: vs #10 Flowery Branch

It was a bit shocking to see the Tigers lose. Not because they aren’t capable of it, but it’s become a habit to start off with a W. Now that Dawson has been knocked out of the state top-10, they will regroup and gear up for #10-ranked Flowery Branch, who also is coming off a shocking upset (FB was ranked #4).

#6 HABERSHAM CENTRAL

LAST RANK: #7
RECORD: 1-0 (0-0)
LAST: W 27-6 vs Madison County
NEXT: @ Apalachee

The Raiders got a big boost from the defense. That was unexpected, but a great surprise as Madison County is capable of putting up points. Habersham’s Jackson Clouatre and Joshua Pickett led the offense, while too many guys to name stood out on defense, which as a group totaled three interceptions.

#7 UNION COUNTY

LAST RANK: #6
RECORD: 0-1 (0-0)
LAST: L 22-24 vs Fannin County
NEXT: @ #8 Commerce

It was a heart-breaker in many ways for Union County in Week 1. The late loss to Fannin was hard enough to swallow, but add in that it snapped a 16-year streak of starting out 1-0 (was the top streak in the state for openers) and it’s even tougher. Union also got knocked out of the state top-10, and perhaps the biggest blow of all…Jonah Daniel is out indefinitely with a broken ankle suffered in the third quarter. On the plus side, Logan Helcher showed big strides at QB, and receiver Keyton Chitwood emerged as a viable threat.

#8 STEPHENS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #8
RECORD: 0-1 (0-0)
LAST: L 6-44 @ White County
NEXT: vs North Hall

Stephens didn’t get much traction on offense, or defense, in Cleveland. The Indians will look to rebound at home against North Hall. The defense will have to find a way to stop the option.

#9 BANKS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #9
RECORD: 0-1 (0-0)
LAST: L 18-41 vs #8 Commerce
NEXT: @ Franklin County

Banks County struggled with Commerce, but who hasn’t? The Leopards did hang in there for awhile, which is a great sign. This week will be a little more telling of Banks County.

#10 LUMPKIN COUNTY

LAST RANK: #10
RECORD: 0-1 (0-0)
LAST: L 3-33 vs Franklin County
NEXT: BYE

Lumpkin County was nowhere near where we thought they’d be against Franklin County. First game jitters and just not enough consistency on either side of the ball. The only way from here is up, and they’ll have a bye week to prep for playing at Towns County in a couple of weeks.

#11 TOWNS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #11
RECORD: 0-1 (0-0)
LAST: L 7-10 vs Armuchee
NEXT: vs Bethlehem Christian

Towns County narrowly lost on Friday, teasing the crowd for the program’s first win since 2018. It has been a long time, and maybe that first one will come at home with the first four games in Hiawassee.
