Game of the Week: White County vs Stephens County
The first BLITZ Game of the Week for 2020 comes from Cleveland in a much-hyped matchup. Should be a great one, as the Warriors look for their first win over Stephens in 10 years.
The Warriors (0-0) have all the makings of a special team – the experience, the talent, the coaching, the region. It all lines up. J Ben Haynes is set for his final season along with prime-time target Cooper Turner. The defense is just as good as the offense, with Zion McMullen and Silas Mulligan among the many playmakers on that side of the ball. Remember, for years, the Warriors have been in 4A with Marist, Blessed Trinity, and Flowery Branch…that’s no longer a thing. While a grueling experience, it has no doubt made them stronger and primed to WIN now!
The Indians (0-0) are looking to turn the page from last year’s disappointing 1-win season. Stephens had some weapons, but the offense was extremely predicable with Hudson Spurlock (Air Force) getting the ball in his hands almost literally every play. With a dual-QB look in 2020, and star receiver Gamarion Carter (Liberty commit) back for his senior year, Wesley Tankersley should be able to do some more things this season. This is NOT last year’s Indians’ team.

- 28.1 OFFENSE AVG

White County just has too many weapons. We like Stephens County to make some big strides in 2020 and likely make a playoff appearance, but the Warriors are just locked and loaded, and playing at home certainly helps. Want a bolder prediction? First TD of the season for the Warriors…a J Ben Haynes 25-yard or better TD pass to Cooper Turner. OUR PICK: WHITE COUNTY
DO WE BRING LUCK?
A little bit for White County. We’ve taken in 25 Warriors games in the past, and they have gone 14-11 in those contests, including four wins in the last five. That includes two wins over Stephens that we have seen. Speaking of Stephens County, it has gone 8-7 in the 15 games we’ve seen them play.
DETAILS OF THE MATCHUP
TIME: 7:30 PM Kickoff
PLACE: White County HS / Cleveland, GA
LAST MEETING: 2015; Stephens County 21, White County 20
ALL-TIME RECORD: Stephens County 3, White County 1
RECORDS: White County Warriors (0-0; 0-0 in 7-AAA); Stephens County Indians (0-0; 0-0 in 8-AAA)
The Indians hold the edge with a 3-1 lead in the all-time series. Though the teams have scrimmaged more recently, the last official meeting was 2015, and it was a doozy, as Stephens walked off the field 21-20 winners. White County last won in 2010, which was the first-ever meeting. The Indians have won three in a row. The teams have never squared off earlier than October, for whatever that is worth. Below are the three times we’ve seen the teams square off.
