The Lady Tigers are certainly in it to win it in 2020. Commerce came oh so close to reaching the 1A State Title game last season, finishing third in Columbus. With just about every piece of the puzzle back on the roster for this season, it appears the stars may be lining up.

“This group has an unbelievable desire to come together and reach a goal,” says coach Melissa Mullis. “That goal is to win a state title.”

When the dust settled last season, it was a 23-win historic run for Commerce, who has three straight years (all Sweet 16 or deeper), and six times in the past eight seasons. Mullis and her very experienced team are not just winning, they’re having fun doing it.

“As a team, we came up with a goal of winning region as a first step,” says senior Maggie Mullis, who has verbally committed to ABAC. “Our step after that is to just take every game as it goes, and eventually getting us to the final game, a state championship. I feel like we have the potential to get there and do great.”

Commerce is 5-1 overall and 4-0 in region play already. The opening of the season featured three wins by a combined score of 39-1.

“Honestly, I think we have a really solid team” says junior slugger Carson Hobbs. “One through nine our hitters are very solid. It’s fun because one inning we’ll score one run and the next inning we’ll score six runs or seven runs.”

Players such as Rachel Morgan, Carson and Grace Hobbs, Maggie Mullis, Emma Davis, and others make for a group that forms a close bond, and plays at a high level.

The Lady Tigers are ranked #4 currently in Class 1A, and looking every bit the part of a state title contending group on the diamond.

“This year, when we get [to state], we’re going to give it everything we got,” says senior Rachel Morgan, a Truett McConnell University commit. “That’s our motivation right now.”
