Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year – Shannon Segars

Shannon Segars was staring down what was promising to be an incredible season to polish off his Commerce career. Even though he didn’t get to finish it, or even barely get it started, the hype surrounding the work he had put in was enough to earn him Athlete of the Year honors for Track & Field.

  • Long Jump: 23’1 (School Record)
  • Triple Jump: 42′-7.5″
  • 2019: Area Champion & State Champion (LJ); Relays State 5th
  • Ranked #4 in GA in Long Jump (all classes) & 46th in the nation

The senior was a long jump, triple jump and relays star, and even sprinted in the 100. It’s a shame we couldn’t see him earn some more hardware to close it out.

  1. Shannon Segars – 62 pts (11 1st-place votes)
  2. Grey Bourlet – 37.25 (2)
  3. Robbie Head – 31.5
  4. Griffin Stephens – 19.25 (2)
  5. Ryder Pagel – 17.75
  6. Collin Kilgore – 14.5 (1)
  7. Nix Burkett – 13.75

Voting for Player of the Year is performed by an internal voting panel consisting of mostly local sports reporters, as well as a small group of former officials, former players, and former coaches. The panel ranks the finalists in order, producing a Heisman-style voting point total.

Segars is the third Commerce athlete to claim the honors. He’s also the first jumper to win it in four years. This award has typically favored seniors, as it has gone to such an athlete nine times.

Five of the seven finalists are moving on. Of the two finalists coming back, Grey Bourlet (Tallulah Falls) is the early favorite seeing as he was runner-up in the voting. Collin Kilgore (Dawson) is also a prime candidate, and no doubt someone else will emerge.
