600: A look back at the hundreds of awards we’ve handed out

With Ty Burchett being named the BLITZ Pick for Baseball Player of the Week, we have now hit the 600 mark for Players of the Week since BLITZ began in 2009. That’s a LOT of kids being recognized.

Yes, we keep great track records of how all of the honors get divided out. Here are some interesting numbers about the 600 Player of the Week awards.

BY SCHOOL

Dawson County has taken more POW awards than any other school in our coverage area. Noted are Hayesville and GMCA, which were only for a short time as part of our coverage.

DAWSON COUNTY *2009-Present102
WHITE COUNTY *2009-Present79
RABUN COUNTY *2013-Present74
HABERSHAM CENTRAL *2009-Present70
BANKS COUNTY *2012-Present70
UNION COUNTY *2010-Present54
LUMPKIN COUNTY *2009-Present42

BY CLASSIFICATION

The breakdown of classification goes like this:

  • SENIORS – 294
  • JUNIORS – 188
  • SOPHOMORES – 79
  • FRESHMEN – 39

This is not really shocking, as more often than not, seniors have fine-tuned their craft and typically stand out with experience and playing time. Juniors too, and it’s always fun when a freshman or sophomore gives us a great glimpse of the future.

BY GENDER

Boys have won 362, and girls 238. While this on the surface seems wildly unbalanced, consider that football in and of itself (see below) accounts for the majority of our awards, which is comprised of only boys. Take football out of the picture, and the girls have won 47 more than the boys.

BY SPORT

Which brings us to this. Here’s a breakdown by sport:

FOOTBALL171
BASKETBALL154
SOCCER65
SOFTBALL64
BASEBALL62
CROSS COUNTRY37
TRACK & FIELD17
VOLLEYBALL16
GOLF8
WRESTLING5
TENNIS1

Football and basketball have long ruled the awards we hand out. This is natural as the dissemination of information on these two sports is rapid and consistent, and frankly these sports are king in the state of Georgia. People may be surprised to see soccer in that third spot, but that sport is continuing to gain traction and long has been very strong in Northeast Georgia. Baseball and softball are about equal.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS

This is the fun part. Who are the ones who have won the most Player of the Week awards? Here are the top 11:

  • Gunner Stockton (Rabun football) – 9
  • Austin Jones (Rabun football) – 9
  • Bailey Fisher (Rabun football) – 9
  • Dasha Cannon (White basketball) – 7
  • Carl Cleveland (Banks basketball) – 7
  • Coey Watson (Dawson football) – 6
  • Pierson Allison (Union football) – 5
  • Tybee Denton (Banks softball) – 5
  • Jaycie Bowen (Banks softball/basketball) – 5
  • Charlie Woerner (Rabun football/track) – 5
  • Jenna Gearing (White cross country/track) – 5

Stockton is still ONLY a sophomore, so he’s sure to be the one with the most ever. All of these athletes to win 5-plus Player of the Week awards are or were next-level players in their respective sport. All told, there are 109 athletes to win multiple Player of the Week awards, which equates to 16% of the winners will or have repeated at some point.

BY YEAR

This too is fascinating to look at. The breakdown by year reveals the increase in awards handed out over the past 3 years. That’s because for years and years the schools, players, parents, friends, fans, etc asked for a Fan Vote. That of course typically doubles the amount, as BLITZ usually picks a separate person aside from voting results. Also worth noting that in the first 4 years, a POW was only awarded whenever a full-length BLITZ TV show (every other week) was produced, and was not a winner for each sport. Rather, only one overall winner was announced for all sports combined.
