Soccer preview: Preseason Power Rankings (Boys)

The boys are set to take the pitch for 2020…teams like Union and Jefferson were oh so close to a state championship last year. Here are the first Power Rankings of 2020…

1. JEFFERSON

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 17-3 (6-0); Region Champions; 3A State Semifinals; #3 State Ranking
  • COACH: Casey Colquitt
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Javy Flores
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Roberto Quintal

The Dragons will have to live life without Flores (12 shutouts, 0.5 GAA), which will be a huge ask for the next man up. Quintal is back to lead the offense for his senior year, though, so Casey Colquitt still has a lot to play with for a team that won the region and made a very serious run for a state title last year.

2. HABERSHAM CENTRAL

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 13-4-2 (8-2); Region Runner-Up; 6A State Sweet 16
  • COACH: Ric Wallace
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Alex Ramirez
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Steven Bennett, Ethan Contreras

The Raiders are fresh off a fantastic season in ’19, and ready for more this time around. Back is Bennett for his senior season (10 G, 6 A), as well as Contreras (9 G, 9 A). That duo will be great once again up front, but between the pipes someone will have to replace Ramirez (1.63 GAA). Habersham has a chance to win a region crown and make an ever deeper playoff run in 2020.

3. UNION COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 13-5 (5-2); Region 4th; 2A State Runner-Up; #2 State Ranking
  • COACH: Leland Sarrell
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Brian Smith,
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Aaron Helton, Kobi Robbins, Kyler Robbins

While losing Smith (16 G, 4 A) is a monumental loss, Leland Sarrell has GK Helton back (1.6 GAA) as well as Kobi and Kyler Robbins (combined 19 G, 15 A). Can this team repeat last year’s miracle run? Enough guys are back to make that possible, and the Robbins brothers might be able to take their games to new heights and make it happen.

4. WHITE COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 4-11 (0-6); Region 7th
  • COACH: Jeremy Stille
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: N/A
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Niko Stavros, Hayden Gensler

The Warriors have Stavros (10 G, 6 A) and Gensler back (8 G, 7 A), which as immediate boost for this team coming in. They fell on the wrong side of some close games, but will need to win at least 3 of the region matches to grab a playoff spot.

5. RABUN COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 6-3 (5-2); Region 3rd; 2A State RND 1
  • COACH: Greg Stephens
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Tito Diaz
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: N/A

Losing Diaz (21 G, 2 A), who was the best in program history, means a huge void on the roster, not just on offense. There are still a lot of talented players on this team though, and they should make a good shot at a region championship and as usual, make the playoffs.

6. TOWNS COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 6-6 (6-0); Region Champions; 1A State RND 1
  • COACH: Jonny Eyrich
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: N/A
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Peyton Barrett

Barrett returns (9 G, 2 A) returns to anchor the defending region champs! Should be a solid team this year in Hiawassee.

7. DAWSON COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 4-10 (4-2); Region 3rd; 3A State RND 1; #10 State Ranking
  • COACH: Patrick Muenchen
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: N/A
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: N/A

It’s been a tough couple of years for Dawson. Even still, they did well enough in region play to get a playoff spot. They should be even better this season as many guys were getting their feet wet last time out.

8. LUMPKIN COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 4-11 (1-5); Region 6th
  • COACH: Mark Wade
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Harrison Spivey
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: N/A

The Indians lose top scorer Spivey from last year’s team. It will be an open competition to see who’s going to be taking most of the shots for Lumpkin.

9. COMMERCE

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 5-10 (4-2); Region Runner-Up; 1A State RND 1
  • COACH: Robert Knox
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: N/A
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: N/A

The Tigers had a great first season in their history, making the playoffs and notching 4 region wins (5 overall). We still don’t know many of the players on this team, so time will tell where they go in our list.

10. BANKS COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 4-12 (2-5); Region 6th
  • COACH: Michael Boomer
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Jesse Elias
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: N/A

Banks County loses Elias, a top defender. This team showed some good signs with a couple of region wins, but they’ll need to take that next step this season if they want to see the postseason.

11. STEPHENS COUNTY

  • 2019 RECORD/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1-15-1 (0-4); Region 5th
  • COACH: Bob Dillashaw
  • KEY PLAYERS LOST: Jarrett Scott, Hunter Vaughn
  • KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Chandler Brown

The Indians will have some growing pains after losing some talented players on their roster who were the senior leaders. The good news is a simple region victory can get these guys into the playoffs.
