Girls Hoops Power Rankings: Mid-January

SBT Team online ad FOOTBALL

A few more big tests have been thrown on the local girls hoops scene, which has brought us more clarity as we dish out the latest Power Rankings (Mid-January report).

#1 RABUN CO LADY WILDCATS

RECORD: 17-1 (7-1)
LAST RANKING: #1

Rabun’s 16-game win streak came to an end with a tough loss at Putnam County. That’s three top-10 teams in the region with former #1-ranked Rabun, #5 Union, and #6 Putnam. Big rematches are set against Banks, Union, and Putnam, and will determine region seeding. DeeDee Dillard calls this offensively her most balanced team ever.

#2 JEFFERSON LADY DRAGONS

RECORD: 16-3 (7-0)
LAST RANKING: #2

The #2-ranked Lady Dragons continue to dominate, winning 3 straight and still without blemish within region play. The fun one coming up real soon is a matchup with unbeaten and top-ranked Buford in a non-region contest on Saturday…should be fun!

#3 UNION CO LADY PANTHERS

RECORD: 15-3 (6-1)
LAST RANKING: #3

Union grabs a spot in the top-5 of the state rankings for the first time. These girls have a great mix of veteran leadership and pure raw talent. They have won 4 in a row and anticipate big games against Rabun and Banks (rematches) and two against Putnam.

#4 STEPHENS CO LADY INDIANS

RECORD: 15-5 (3-1)
LAST RANKING: #4

The Lady Indians are state-ranked now, and have won 9 of the past 11 games, which includes the lone region loss to Oconee County, who awaits on January 28 in a rematch that will be very entertaining. Stephens lost that game by only 6 points.

#5 DAWSON CO LADY TIGERS

RECORD: 11-8 (5-3)
LAST RANKING: #5

Dawson still has a spot in the top-10 rankings, but has dropped two straight and have gone 3-3 in the last 6. Clearly the Lady Tigers are figuring some things out, and it’s better to deal with now rather than later. Some of the losses have been really tough games that could have gone either way. These girls will be just fine, but another big meeting with Lumpkin (won the last time) awaits very soon, as well as a rematch with North Hall (won by 3 points last time).

#6 LUMPKIN CO LADY INDIANS

RECORD: 11-8 (3-5)
LAST RANKING: #6

Lumpkin County is a top-10 ranked team, but has dropped 2 of the past 3, by a combined 8 points to East Hall and North Hall. Those ones hurt bad, as the Lady Indians are now with 5 losses in region play with still some big games to go. An intriguing battle with White County (who they previously beat this year) comes on Saturday.

#7 WHITE CO LADY WARRIORS

RECORD: 14-6 (6-2)
LAST RANKING: #7

The Lady Warriors had won 11 in a row until a recent 6-point loss to Marist. That’s huge compared to the first meeting this year, where Marist won by 15 points. We’ll say it again…this team is DANGEROUS! It will be very interesting to see how the Lady Warriors handle Lumpkin this time around, as they play Saturday.

#8 TALLULAH FALLS LADY INDIANS

RECORD: 10-5 (2-1)
LAST RANKING: #9

Tallulah Falls has now won 7 of the last 9, and some young players have started to really step things up and make a name for themselves.

#9 COMMERCE LADY TIGERS

RECORD: 11-8 (1-4)
LAST RANKING: #8

Commerce falls a bit after getting beat at Tallulah Falls. A rematch against Towns County awaits next, as they won that meeting the first time up.

#10 HABERSHAM CENTRAL LADY RAIDERS

RECORD: 10-9 (2-3)
LAST RANKING: #10

The Lady Raiders corrected what was a 2-game slide with a region win over Apalachee. There are still some tough games ahead for Hab Central, but all of them are winnable. Of the 3 region losses, they have come by a combined 18 points.

#11 BANKS CO LADY LEOPARDS

RECORD: 8-11 (4-4)
LAST RANKING: #11

Banks County is still very much in the mix here, but have alternated wins and losses in January. Losses to Union, Rabun, and Putnam have set the tone for where the girls stack with the region. The Elbert loss they’d particularly love to have back. Realistically, there are 5 times in contention for 4 spots for state.

#12 TOWNS CO LADY INDIANS

RECORD: 6-11 (2-2)
LAST RANKING: #12

We will find out between Towns and Commerce where they truly align after a meeting Friday night. Tallulah Falls on the 28th will also bring more clarity to the Power Rankings. This is a solid team really.
