Boys Hoops Power Rankings: Mid-January

SBT Team online ad FOOTBALL

Another couple of weeks equals more clarity for our Power Rankings. Still a bit muddy with some of the head-to-head versus full-body-of-work outlooks. But here goes…

#1 DAWSON CO TIGERS

RECORD: 18-2 (8-0)
LAST RANKING: #1

That win streak has reached 8, and has culminated with a #2 ranking in the state. This is a special year once again for Dawson County, who looks good enough to even outdo last year’s region title and Final Four team.

#2 BANKS CO LEOPARDS

RECORD: 16-3 (7-1)
LAST RANKING: #2

Banks County hit a buzz-saw at Putnam, taking its first region loss. Still, it was a close game, and this time, aside from the loss to Lumpkin that was totally uncharacteristic, has been as consistent as it gets.

#3 JEFFERSON DRAGONS

RECORD: 11-7 (4-3)
LAST RANKING: #3

The Dragons have won a couple in a row in region, which bodes very well for the stretch run. There’s too much talent for this team not to make a run for a region title and/or a solid playoff run.

#4 TOWNS CO INDIANS

RECORD: 11-6 (3-2)
LAST RANKING: #4

The Indians are riding a 3-game win streak, including an overtime thriller. Next up is Commerce, which can provide some more clarity there if they secure the sweep for the season over the Tigers.

#5 UNION CO PANTHERS

RECORD: 9-8 (4-3)
LAST RANKING: #6

Union has a couple of wins in a row and have a chance next to avenge an earlier loss to Monticello in region. The guys got a late start since most played football for a couple of extra weeks, so it’s taking a bit longer for everything to fall into place. This is a good opportunity to prove what they have in the next 3 weeks.

#6 TALLULAH FALLS INDIANS

RECORD: 7-9 (3-1)
LAST RANKING: #11

Tallulah Falls had it bad for awhile with 4 straight losses, putting them at #11 in our last rankings. But winning 3 of the past 4, including over Commerce by 33 points, proved the Indians need to move up here. Combine that with a win over White earlier this season, but falling to Dawson and Union, this seems like the appropriate slot. Yes, they did drop one to Rabun, but it’s hard to adjust the clutter from all these programs in our rankings 6-12.

#7 WHITE CO WARRIORS

RECORD: 9-11 (2-6)
LAST RANKING: #7

The Warriors have gone 2-3 in the past 5 games this month, and the losses were fairly lopsided. The wins were great over Flowery Branch and North Hall (by 4 points). This program is still young and have beaten Habersham (twice), Lumpkin, Union, etc.

#8 COMMERCE TIGERS

RECORD: 11-8 (1-4)
LAST RANKING: #5

This has been a tough month for the Tigers, as they got throttled at Tallulah Falls by 33 points, and lost a very close one to Prince Avenue Christian. Last week in the Top 5 of our rankings, but now we must move them down until they right the ship. They have gone 2-5 this month, although two of those losses were very close.

#9 LUMPKIN CO INDIANS

RECORD: 7-12 (3-5)
LAST RANKING: #9

Since the improbable and historic win over then-#2 ranked Banks, the Indians have gone just 2-4, although they are coming off a win over East Hall. A game against Fannin and White will wrap up the week, but Lumpkin is hoping to maybe go 4-1, or 3-2 at least, over the final 5 regular season games.

#10 STEPHENS CO INDIANS

RECORD: 7-13 (1-3)
LAST RANKING: #8

Stephens County have dropped 3 in a row and 4 of the last 5. It’s getting crunch time with big dates coming up.

#11 HABERSHAM CENTRAL RAIDERS

RECORD: 7-13 (1-4)
LAST RANKING: #10

The Raiders got their first win of 2020 the other night against Apalachee. That reversed a 4-game skid. With 5 to play, Habersham has a chance to make some noise.

#12 RABUN CO WILDCATS

RECORD: 5-13 (3-5)
LAST RANKING: #12

The Wildcats have been okay in January, going 2-3. A very difficult loss to swallow is a 63-60 loss to Oglethorpe. This team has the makings of being able to get to state, but a rematch with Union and the finale against Putnam will help determine that.
