Boys Hoops Power Rankings: January

2020 is here…and with it comes our first Power Rankings of the decade. Keep in mind with a sport like basketball, head-to-head matchups are a determining factor, but not as much as the full body of work to this point. With that said, here we go:

#1 DAWSON CO TIGERS

RECORD: 15-2 (5-0)
LAST RANKING: #1

Winning 5 in a row and 12 of the past 13 games keeps Dawson atop our rankings, as the #4-ranked Tigers keep clawing past the opposition. With 1,144 points scored, they have the best offense in the area with 67.3 per game. Good luck stopping these guys!

#2 BANKS CO LEOPARDS

RECORD: 13-2 (4-0)
LAST RANKING: #2

Yes, Banks County dropped a shocker to Lumpkin County, but the full body of work suggests the Leopards are still number two here. They did split with Lumpkin on the year, and have also taken down Jefferson, Stephens twice, Rabun, and Commerce among local programs. These guys score at 69 pts/game. Since the upset loss to the Indians, Banks has won 5 of its past 6.

#3 JEFFERSON DRAGONS

RECORD: 9-7 (2-3)
LAST RANKING: #3

The Dragons have won 5 of their last 7, and are starting to assert themselves in the playoff race for Region 8-AAA, arguably one of the toughest regions in the state. At 68.9 pts/game, the offense has been solid. The defense would love to get more stops, as it averages 62.6 allowed per contest.

#4 TOWNS CO INDIANS

RECORD: 8-4 (0-1)
LAST RANKING: #7

The Indians have been electric as of late, taking down rivals Union County in the Battle of the States finale, making it the first time ever the home team boys have claimed the title. Kolby Moss is the most recent 1,000-point scorer on a team that has plenty of playmakers in Aidan Berrong and Colin Crowder. Towns has beaten Union twice this season and also taken down Commerce.

#5 COMMERCE TIGERS

RECORD: 10-4 (1-0)
LAST RANKING: #9

For a team that once held the bottom of these rankings, the Tigers have turned their program around. This is already the most wins for Commerce since 2012-13 (12 wins). And they’re just getting started.

#6 UNION CO PANTHERS

RECORD: 7-7 (2-2)
LAST RANKING: #8

The Panthers were starting to really put it together until a crushing loss in the BOTS Finals to rivals Towns County. They’ve rebounded well with a big win over Rabun, and have also beaten Lumpkin, Towns once, and Tallulah Falls this year. They have been beat twice by Towns and once by White County early on. While Pierson Allison and his 1K points are impressive, Kyle Morlock’s play as of late is a great sign that this team will grab momentum heading into the stretch run.

#7 WHITE CO WARRIORS

RECORD: 7-9 (1-4)
LAST RANKING: #5

The Warriors have lost 4 of their past 5 games, which is not ideal. Still, these guys have shown the ability to win with victories over Lumpkin, twice over Habersham, and once over Union, though they have lost to Tallulah Falls.

#8 STEPHENS CO INDIANS

RECORD: 6-10 (1-1)
LAST RANKING: #6

Stephens County continues to be somewhat unpredictable, splitting with both Habersham and Rabun among local competition. They’ve twice been bested by Banks also.

#9 LUMPKIN CO INDIANS

RECORD: 6-11 (2-4)
LAST RANKING: #10

The potential was there for the Indians to move up in the rankings after a GIANT win over #3-ranked Banks County, but what followed were 3 losses in 4 games. And still, Lumpkin, while having some good signs and great play from guys like Pat Jackson, have suffered losses to Banks, White, Dawson, and Union this year.

#10 HABERSHAM CENTRAL RAIDERS

RECORD: 6-10 (0-1)
LAST RANKING: #11

The Raiders have been decent this season, beating Stephens and Rabun among local programs, and Malachi Dooley has emerged as a leader while only a sophomore for Habersham Central.

#11 TALLULAH FALLS INDIANS

RECORD: 4-7 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #4

Tallulah Falls has now dropped 3 in a row, and have lost this year to Union, Dawson, and Rabun, despite beating White County earlier this year.

#12 RABUN CO WILDCATS

RECORD: 3-11 (1-3)
LAST RANKING: #12

The Wildcats have dropped 7 of their past 8, and will seek traction during the thick of the region slate to try and earn a playoff spot.
