All-Decade Teams: The most successful programs in the 2010s

Take a snap shot of the 2010s and what floats to the surface are the teams that stand out. Not for just a season or two, but in terms of a full 10-year span from 2010-2019. While at first the homework assignment to publish this seemed overwhelming, the task flows from what passes the test of who comes to mind when you think of each sport. Then we compiled the numbers — playoff runs, region championships, and more. Here goes:
FOOTBALL (75+ WINS)
JEFFERSON DRAGONS

RECORD: 100-24
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 9 (2011-19)
REGION TITLES: 4 (2012, 2014, 2016, 2019)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 9 straight playoff runs from 2011-19, including a State Championship (2012), a Semifinal berth (2016), and a total of 6 Quarterfinal runs or deeper (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019).
COACH(ES): T McFerrin (2010-12), Ben Hall (2013-16), Gene Catchcart (2017-19)
Even in the one season that didn’t come with a playoff appearance (2010) to open the decade, the Dragons were 6-4. You’re talking about 7 10-win seasons. Exactly 100 wins in the 10 seasons averages 10 per year.
RABUN COUNTY WILDCATS

RECORD: 86-34
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 8 (2012-19)
REGION TITLES: 6 (2014-19)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 5 straight quarterfinal or deeper runs (2015-19), 1 State Championship game (2017)
COACH(ES): Danny Durham (2010-11), Lee Shaw (2012-18), Jaybo Shaw (2019)
This program’s records are even better if you subtract the first two seasons in the 2010s, as it went just 4-16 in 2010-11. That means the Wildcats did more than enough in 80% of the decade to be worthy of the honors. This is the golden era of Rabun County football, with 5 10-win seasons to its credit.
COMMERCE TIGERS

RECORD: 76-42
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 10 (2010-19)
REGION TITLES: 0
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 10 straight playoff runs (2010-19) to span the decade, 1 sub-region title (2014), 2 Semifinal appearances (2014, 2015), 4 Quarterfinal or deeper runs (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018)
COACH(ES): Steve Savage (2010), Marvin Justice (2011-12), Michael Brown (2013-19)
Long have the Tigers been one of the more illustrious program in the state. There have been 2 10-win seasons this decade and 4 playoff runs to run past the second round. That’s great success, even if it meant doing so under 3 head coaches.
FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTIONS: Union County (70 wins, 6 Playoff runs, 0 Region Titles, 1 10-win season); Stephens County (67 wins, 8 Playoff runs, 0 Region Titles, 2 Sweet 16 runs); Dawson County (63 wins, 6 Playoff runs, 1 Quarterfinal, 1 Region Title, 1 10-win season); White County (53 wins, 6 Playoff runs, 0 Region Titles, 2 Sweet 16 runs)

SOFTBALL (175+ WINS)
UNION COUNTY LADY PANTHERS

RECORD: 210-116
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 9 (2010-16, 2018-19)
REGION TITLES: 4 (2010-2012, 2015)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1 State Runner-Up finish (2010), 2 Columbus Runs/Quarterfinals (2010, 2015), 5 Sweet 16 or deeper runs (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019)
COACH(ES): Jessica Stewart (2010-17), Stephen Mitchell (2018-19)
Though arguably more of the success came in the first half of the decade, the Lady Panthers still closed out the decade strong with a second round appearance. This program won at least 16 games in 9 out of 10 years, won 4 region titles, and made 9 playoff runs.
BANKS COUNTY LADY LEOPARDS

RECORD: 193-95
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 7 (2012-15, 2017-19)

COACH(ES): Dean Goodwin (2010-11), Tony Bowen (2012-18), Kelby Cronic (2019)
A State Title wrapped up the decade for a program that was on the cusp for 2 years prior. Winning came as a habit, and included 8 seasons with at least 16 wins to go with 4 region titles and 7 playoff runs.
JEFFERSON LADY DRAGONS

RECORD: 187-118
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 7 (2012-13, 2015-19)

COACH(ES): Mike Paul (2010-15), Brittani Lawrence (2016-19)
Unbelievable program! Every year making state for the whole decade, and 6 30-win seasons, are you joking?!? Mix in 5 Region Championships, and this program has everything except a State Championship to its resume. That could come soon enough.
HABERSHAM CENTRAL LADY RAIDERS

COACH(ES): Sutton (2010), Sam Borg (2011-17), Matt Dover (2018-19)
One of the top programs in the state, highlighted by the Jenna Gearing years, a 3-time state champion and 4-time region champ in her own right. Still, it was girls like Jessie Dotson (before) and Jaelen Alexander (after) and others (including sisters Ellie & Rachel Gearing) who also kept this program among the top contenders. Had it not been for residing in the toughest region in the entire state after moving into 7-AAAA, these girls would have more region titles and perhaps a state title or two.
Stats above speak for themselves. Too many standouts to mention, but girls like Madalyn Walters and Frankie Muldoon helped guide this program to some pretty big heights.
UNION COUNTY PANTHERS

STATE TRIPS AS TEAM: 9 (2010, 2012-19)
REGION TITLES: 2 (2014-15)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Making state 9 out of 10 years and winning 2 Region Titles. State Champions (2018) and Runner-Ups in 2019, and 5 Top-5s.

State Champions in 2018 and Runner-up in 2019 really put a stamp on this program for the decade. A pair of region championships and 9 state appearances speaks for itself as well.
COMMERCE TIGERS

STATE TRIPS AS TEAM: 9 (2011-19)
REGION TITLES: 1 (2019)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Making state 9 out of 10 years and winning 1 Area Title, a State Runner-Up (2018) and Championship (2019), 7 Top-10s, 5 Top-5s

State Champs and Runner-Up to close out the decade, and making state about every year, and almost always in the Top-10 or Top-5.
JEFFERSON LADY DRAGONS

UNION COUNTY LADY PANTHERS

STATE TRIPS AS TEAM: 8 (2012-19)

Thad Burgess made this a top-notch program. The Tigers hit some big heights with Tyler Dominy and Will Anglin anchoring the lineup to its first-ever Elite 8 run. That led the way to the ’18-19 Final 4 run with Luke Chism and Jasper Gibson. One of the most consistent teams of the decade on the hardwood.
DAWSON COUNTY LADY TIGERS

REGION TITLES: 2 (2014-15, 2015-16)

JEFFERSON LADY DRAGONS

COACH(ES): Brandy Corbett (2009-12), Jason Gibson (2013-18), Greg Brown (2018-20)
Despite a number of coaching changes, this team played exceptionally well throughout the 2010s, especially in the later half of the decade. A top-shelf program.
BANKS COUNTY LADY LEOPARDS

COACH(ES): Jerry King (2009-16), Steve Shedd (2016-20)
The resume includes everything desired save a Final 4 or State Title, but consistency has been the key for the Lady Leopards with players such as Katilyn Duncan, Jaycie Bowen, Taylor Kennedy, Allison Smith, in the spotlight.
BANKS COUNTY LEOPARDS

RECORD: 165-100 [11-1 AS OF 12.27]

UNION COUNTY LADY PANTHERS

RECORD: 163-109 [10-2 AS OF 12.27]
PLAYOFF TRIPS: 6
REGION TITLES: 2 (2012-13, 2014-15)

COACH(ES): Mike West (2009-10), Hughes (2011-13), Tucker (2012-17), Corey Garrett (2017-19) Crystal Beach (2019-20)
A program with so much turnover at the coaching position has stayed in the mix annually for a region title and playoff spot. The amount of victories barely gets this team in this list, though it lacks on its resume some deep playoff runs, which appear to be on the horizon.
BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTIONS: Rabun County boys: 158 wins, 7 PO runs, 4 20-win seasons; Towns County girls: 151 wins, 6 PO runs, 1 Final 4, 2 Elite 8, 4 20-win seasons; Jefferson boys: 151 wins; Union County boys: 148 wins, 4 PO runs; Tallulah Falls boys/girls: verifying information
