Crystal Ball: Round 1 Predictions

We are bound to pick with our heart more than our brain here, as our local programs we feel all have a shot to make a deep run, or better! Here are the official BLITZ Predictions for the first round of the playoffs, and a brief preview of each matchup.

Matchups for HOME games among local programs are listed first
*Rankings next to team name are seedings from respective region

#1 Rabun County vs #4 BEST Academy

#1-ranked Rabun County (10-0) is fresh off its third undefeated regular season in school history. This matchup we’ve seen before, against BEST Academy. Both instances were playoff games in 2016 and 2017. The Wildcats outscored the Eagles 90-22 in those games, including a 35-2 win in 2017’s second round. BEST (4-6) are led by a junior QB Da’von Hixson and sophomore RB Nique Bell. This one though, should be over by halftime. WE PICK RABUN

#1 Jefferson vs #4 Sonoraville

Colby Clark and Malaki Starks are leading the charge into the first round of the playoffs against #4 seed Sonoraville (5-5). #4-ranked Jefferson (8-1) has never squared off with the Phoenix. WE PICK JEFFERSON

#2 Union County vs #3 South Atlanta

The #8-ranked Panthers (9-1) are seeking to make history in three ways. A win against #3-seed S Atlanta would give head coach Brian Allison the long-awaited first playoff win, which would simultaneously give Union County its first-ever postseason victory (0-6 so far in playoffs), AND would make the Panthers a 10-win program for the first time ever. Pierson Allison, Jonah Daniel, and Sawyer Drake should lead the offense to a crazy night in Blairsville, while the defense will look to John Mancuso, Sloan Sutton, and others to anchor down the win. WE PICK UNION

#10 Commerce vs #23 Trion

The Tigers (8-2) open the playoffs at home against #23-seed Trion. #5-ranked Commerce will look to beat Trion for the eighth straight time. The teams squared off religiously from 2000-07, only avoiding each other once (2001). Three of those meetings were playoff matchups. Interestingly, aside from a 34-18 second round playoff meeting back in 2000, the other six meetings were very close, with all being decided by 9 points or less. The Bulldogs (5-5) will find this meeting more lopsided. WE PICK COMMERCE

#3 Dawson County @ #2 Westminster

Dawson County (7-3) is probably the best 3-loss team in Class 3A. We say that because the Tigers fell only to state-ranked (at some point) GAC, Denmark, and North Hall. #8-ranked Westminster (6-4) will be a tough out, especially on the road. Dawson has never faced Westminster. The Wildcats opened the season as the #4-ranked team in the state, and its four losses are to #7 Woodward Academy, #6 GAC, #2 Marist, and #2 Cedar Grove. It meanwhile took down #6-ranked Lovett just last week. This one will be TOUGH. We are going with our heart, and WE PICK DAWSON

Predicted winners are in bold

#2 Buford vs #3 Decatur
#2 North Hall vs #3 Lovett
#3 Gainesville @ #2 Allatoona
#3 Denmark @ #2 Sandy Creek
#4 Flowery Branch @ #1 Cartersville
