The #2-ranked Jefferson Lady Dragons rallied in the fourth quarter after going down by as much as 5 points, and held on to win 55-52 at Banks County to open the season.
Jefferson (1-0) used 15 first half points by junior Courtney Kidd, who connected on 5 3-pointers. The Lady Leopards (0-1) were able to keep her off the board in the second half. However, it was all-state guard Livi Blackstock who picked up the slack, scoring 9 of her 11 points in the second half.
The visiting Lady Dragons went on a 7-0 run in the first, only to see the Lady Leopards end it with a 6-0 run of their own. After a quarter, Banks led 14-12, and kept their run going, polishing off a 16-3 run that went into the second quarter to go up by as many as 6 points. Jefferson then scored 8 unanswered as part of a 17-5 run into the locker room, leading 27-25 at that point.
Banks County, led by Sadie Simpson’s 12 points, and Kamryn Grier’s 10, went on a blistering 14-0 third quarter run to grab a 41-36 lead heading into the final quarter. Both teams went on 7-0 runs, but it was the Lady Dragons who closed it out when Allianne Clark drilled a dagger 3-pointer with 1:19 to go to erase the deficit and give Jefferson the lead for good.
Kidd’s 15 was a game-high, while Blackstock and Deshona Gaither both had 11 for Jefferson. Chloe Hiatt had 8 and Ellie Kinlaw 6, Natalia Bolden 6, and Clark 4 in the win.
Banks was led by Simpson’s 12 and Grier’s 10, while Jacy Ayers (9 pts), Lillie Venable (8), Hailey Seahorn (6), Kalyn Beasley (5), and Heather Vaughan (2) chipped in in the effort.
