Week 10 Power Rankings

SBT Team online ad FOOTBALL

Things have gotten real – we’re now down to the final two weeks of the regular season. With this edition of the Power Rankings, we also give a synopsis on each team’s playoff hopes.

#1 RABUN COUNTY WILDCATS

LAST RANKING: #1
RECORD: 8-0 (5-0)
WEEK 10: W 61-20 vs Social Circle
NEXT: @ Oglethorpe

Nothing new here for the Cats. They have guaranteed a state playoff appearance, but that’s not even the baseline for this program. The baseline is a region championship, and Rabun will play for a SIXTH in a row when playing Union in Week 12 in Blairsville.

#2 JEFFERSON DRAGONS

LAST RANKING: #2
RECORD: 7-1 (5-0)
WEEK 10: W 26-7 @ Monroe Area
NEXT: vs Jackson County

It was a nice revenge win for the Dragons over Monroe Area. Last season, the defacto 8-AAA title game was played in Jefferson, and Byron Chandler ran all over Jefferson to claim the region crown. This time, Jefferson paid the Hurricanes back by returning the favor, claiming the region crown on their field. This nails down home field for the first two rounds of state at least.

#3 DAWSON COUNTY TIGERS

LAST RANKING: #3
RECORD: 6-2 (3-1)
WEEK 10: W 51-7 vs Fannin County
NEXT: @ Cherokee Bluff

Dawson County is once again back in the playoffs with the win over Fannin. Now the Tigers need to lock up a home playoff game by beating Cherokee Bluff (the biggest surprise team in the state) for starters. The finale against North Hall has some heavy implications as well, since the Trojans also have just one region loss. That game will determine the #2/#3 seeding.

#4 UNION COUNTY PANTHERS

LAST RANKING: #4
RECORD: 8-0 (5-0)
WEEK 10: W 43-0 vs Oglethorpe
NEXT: @ Social Circle

The Panthers were back with the services of Pierson Allison, and came out with a win over Oglethorpe. All the goals are still there, including a chance to play for a region title in Week 12 at home against powerhouse Rabun. Playoffs are a lock, and home field for the first round as well.

#5 COMMERCE TIGERS

LAST RANKING: #5
RECORD: 6-2 (4-1)
WEEK 10: W 56-16 vs Towns County
NEXT: @ Riverside

The Tigers rebounded with a blowout win over Towns, and have all put stamped their spot in the 1A public bracket. Getting a strong seeding is pivotal though, so they need to take care of business against Riverside and whoever they play in the region cross-over game in Week 12.

#6 HABERSHAM CENTRAL RAIDERS

LAST RANKING: #6
RECORD: 3-5 (0-3)
WEEK 10: L 0-41 @ #1 Dacula
NEXT: vs Winder-Barrow

Habersham had the unenviable task of playing the state’s top 6A team on the road. Dacula won handedly. There’s no ZERO margin for error. Habersham MUST win the final two games against Winder-Barrow and Apalachee. It’s very doable. At the moment, Apalachee and Habersham are the only winless teams in the region. Winder is 1-1 with a win over Apalachee, so if Habersham beats both, it will be 2-3, and sit in 4th place over both of them.

#7 WHITE COUNTY WARRIORS

LAST RANKING: #7
RECORD: 4-4 (1-3)
WEEK 10: L 21-28 vs #10 Denmark
NEXT: @ Chestatee

The Warriors, following the loss to Denmark, are officially out of the playoff picture. That’s because Denmark only has one game left (against Flowery Branch). So if Denmark loses to Flowery Branch, it will be 3-3 in region play. At 1-3 currently, even if the Warriors beat Chestatee and get the biggest upset in school history against powerhouse Blessed Trinity in Week 12, a 3-3 mark in region still gives the head-to-head tie-breaker to Denmark. BT and Marist sit atop the region, and Flowery Branch is in at 2-2 with games against West Hall and Denmark left. It’s just a ridiculous region, with four of the top 10 teams in the state right there ahead of White County.

#8 BANKS COUNTY LEOPARDS

LAST RANKING: #8
RECORD: 3-5 (2-3)
WEEK 10: L 13-24 vs Putnam County
NEXT: vs Monticello

The Leopards took a huge hit with a loss to Putnam. The only road that leads to a playoff spot means a MUST WIN over Monticello, and will have to beat Elbert to ensure a ticket.

#9 STEPHENS COUNTY INDIANS

LAST RANKING: #9
RECORD: 1-7 (0-2)
WEEK 10: L 10-42 vs #8 North Oconee
NEXT: @ Madison County

North Oconee handed Stephens its 7th consecutive loss after a promising 1-0 start. Still, believe it or not, in a 5-team region, all the Indians need is ONE WIN in the final two games. Since St. Pius (who isn’t your typical St. Pius selves) awaits in the finale in Week 12, that means Stephens County could go ahead and secure a spot with a win over Madison.

#10 LUMPKIN COUNTY INDIANS

LAST RANKING: #10
RECORD: 1-7 (0-4)
WEEK 10: L 0-59 vs North Hall
NEXT: @ Fannin County

Lumpkin cannot make the playoffs at this point, but could very well play spoiler in the final two games against Fannin, who is in the thick of fighting for a spot. East Hall is on the same ground as Lumpkin, so that finale would be a HUGE spot for the Indians to grab a momentum win to close out the season, which would be huge going into next season.

#11 TOWNS COUNTY INDIANS

LAST RANKING: #11
RECORD: 0-8 (0-5)
WEEK 10: L 16-56 @ #6 Commerce
NEXT: vs Lakeview

Towns County has a chance next week to grab its first win when hosting Lakeview. It’s a very winnable game, as the finale is a TBD opponent in the region cross-over game.
