On a chilly Thursday morning, both the Jefferson girls and boys cross country teams thrived in the conditions, both claiming Region 8-AAA honors.
For the girls, it wasn’t even close, as the Lady Dragons took individually sports numbers one through three, as well as sixth and eighth, for a total of 20 points. For reference, Jackson County came in second at 72 points! Katherine Law claimed individual region honors with a 20:29, while Caitlin Schroeder (21:19) was almost a minute behind in second place. Olivia Kulniszewski (21:24), Emily Byrd (22:33), and Sydney Bowles (23:07) came in 3rd, 6th, and 8th, respectively.
The boys’ meet was a bit closer, as the Dragons (41 points) edged Hart County (45) for the region title. The victory came without star runner Riley Thornton (last year’s region runner-up). Matthew Schroeder (17:14) was the runner-up this time, coming in within 30 seconds of first place. Levi Holiday (17:48) came in 5th, while Cooper Gibson (18:02) came in 7th for Jefferson. Brett Brush (18:27) also came in the top 10 with a 9th-place finish.
Both programs qualify for state.
