The era of 50-point games

There was a time when scoring 50 points in a game was just about unheard of. If we go WAY back, it was perhaps a bit common. Then came the adjustment for decades where teams just didn’t do that. Just in recent weeks, we’ve seen Jefferson put up 70 points (for the second year in a row), and Union did the same, while other teams like Rabun and Dawson are putting up 50 like it’s not that difficult to do. Welcome to the era of high-scoring football games. We did thorough research on all 11 of our local programs to dig up all such games for them in their history.

What you’ll find is a comprehensive look at that data, in order from the most egregious offender in scoring 50 or better, down the least likely to do it. There have been 201 50-plus point outputs by our 11 teams, and of those, 101 have come since the 2010!!

  • BIGGEST SHUTOUT: 83-0 vs East Hall, 1966

The Tigers have the advantage of history in terms of years. Its first occurence was a 59-0 win over Gibson-Mercer back in 1916. Commerce wouldn’t hit 50 again until 1949, but did it 3 times that year. In the ’50s, just once. In the ’60s, 4 times. In the ’70s, 3 times, and 4 times in the 80s. The 1966 83-0 win over East Hall stands as the most absurd among all our local programs.

As Commerce hit a big stride in the ’90s, the team scored 50-plus in 9 different games. The most recent was in 2018, going for a 56-0 win over Providence. The Tigers did it 6 times in the 2000s, and 9 times in the 2010s (so far). That means 9 times in the Michael Brown-era, the team has hit the mark. Here’s the complete list:

The Dragons have 3 less 50-point games than Commerce, but have far more 60-point games to their credit, including two years in a row now with 70 or more (poor East Jackson). A 70-0 win over EJ in 2018 was the biggest blowout and shutout in Dragons history, and almost happened again this year with a 70-6 win at EJ. What’s cool about Jefferson’s 50-point games is that it includes 3 such games in the playoffs, including a 53-51 shootout win over Fitzgerald in 2012. The Dragons hit the half-century mark 4 times in the ’50s and wouldn’t do it again until 3 times in the ’70s and 3 more in the ’80s. The ’90s saw it happen 4 times, 6 times in the 2000s, and 17 times so far in the 2010s, including two this season. 2013 and 2014 saw it happen 4 times in each year for Jefferson. The Wildcats have made this a habit more than any other program around over the past 5 years. Prior to coach Lee Shaw’s arrival to Rabun, the school had hit 50 just 9 times in its history. That goes back to the first time, a 50-0 win over Oglethorpe in 1952. It wouldn’t happen again until 5 times in the ’70s, including 3 times in 1977. The ’98-’99 teams did it 3 times in total. Then Shaw’s high-flying offense did it 5 times in 2013, once in 2015, 5 times in 2016, 6 times in 2017 (including in the Quarterfinals against Screven ON THE ROAD). It also happened 6 times last season including a playoff game. Now that Jaybo Shaw has taken over, it continues. Twice already this season. The boys have hit 60 or more 12 times, all but one of those coming in the last 5 years. Last year’s 65-0 win over Spencer in the opening round of the playoffs is the biggest blowout and shutout in team history. Here are all the occurences:

The Indians have done this 21 times before, including 4 60-point games. The most recent was a 50-20 win over North Oconee in 2017, which marked the 6th time this decade the program has scored 50-plus. In the 2000s, it happened 10 times, including in a playoff shootout loss to Chamblee in 2007 (lost 58-57). A 68-7 win over Northview in 2002 and a 61-0 win over Norcross in 1976 are the biggest blowouts in team history. Here are the occurences:

The Panthers have started doing this in the current Brian Allison-era. Since he has been over the program, Union has eclipsed 50 points 14 times, all of those since 2014. It’s already happened 3 times this year, including a 60-7 win over rivals Towns, and a 74-57 win two weeks ago over Putnam in what was the 5th-highest scoring shootout in state history. The distinction of losing a game despite scoring 50 rests with Union and Stephens both. Union lost 56-55 to Bowdon in the 2015 opening round of the state playoffs. The program reached 50 going back to a 50-0 win over Towns in ’76, and did it only 4 more times between then and 2014. Here are the occurences:

The Tigers have done most of the 16 50-point games in the current Sid Maxwell-era. Since he came to Dawsonville, the Tigers have reached 50 in a game 11 times, including once this year already. The 64-0 win over East Hall last year stands as the most ridiculous, and so does the 63-40 win over Ringgold in the opening round of state in 2015. Prior to 2015, it was accomplished just 5 times, including twice in 2004. The first time ever was in 1999. East Hall was the victim 4 times for Dawson. Here are the occurences:

The Warriors scored 50-plus 3 times in the late ’60s, including a 67-0 win over Lumpkin in ’66 and a team-best 68-7 at East Fannin in ’67. Then came a long gap without hitting the mark, happening next in 2001 in a 50-43 shootout win over Dawson. In the 2010s, it’s now happened 7 times out of the 11. The last came two years ago in 2017, when the Warriors scored 66 against Lumpkin and 56 against Chestatee. Worth noting that WHite County has put up 50-plus on Chestatee 4 times. The Leopards started doing this thing in 1980 with a still-record 52-0 win over Jackson County. That same season prior to that game, they put up a program-best 56 against Towns County. A couple of times in the ’90s Banks County scored more than 50, and since 2010, it’s occured 4 times. Here are the occurences:

Lumpkin has only scored 50-plus 6 times ever, but 4 of those they decided to go for 60. The very first time was a 73-0 win over East Fannin in ’67. Twice in the ’60s they hit the mark, but didn’t again until 2003, a 61-26 win over Union. A 50-0 win over Riverside in 2011 was the next incident, and the last time it happened for Lumpkin was a 63-37 win over Fannin in 2016. Here are the occurences:

W 73-0 vs E Fannin 1967
W 60-0 vs Banks 1974

The Raiders have rarely in 50 years put up 50 or more. That said, scoring 40 is a thing they do almost every week in recent memory. A wild, 72-55 win over East Hall in 2017 set the school record, and also became one of the top-five scoring shootouts in state history. Habersham’s first time scoring 50 was in 1998 in a 50-26 win over West Hall. In 2001, they won 56-8 over Franklin, and 10 years later, a 54-10 win over Winder in 2011 was the next time it happened. Here are the occurences:

W 72-55 @ East Hall 2017

Towns County has also rarely accomplished the feat, and all 4 occurrences came since 2000, beginning with a 53-13 win over Copper Basin that year. 56 against Lakeview in 2017 is the school record. Here are the occurrences:

W 53-13 @ Copper Basin (TN) 2000
W 50-0 vs Hebron Christian 2008
W 56-13 vs Lakeview 2017
