White County’s Nix Burkett wins first-ever Defensive Player of the Month

White County senior Nix Burkett has proven to be a “ball-hawk” on defense, and the senior was recognized Friday as the BLITZ Football Defensive Player of the Month for Weeks 1-4.

In the entire 11-year history of BLITZ, we have had Player of the Week and Player of the Year awards. It became evident over the years that more often than not, the awards went to either strictly offensive players, or two-way guys. NEW for 2019 was the invention of a BLITZ Defensive Player of the Month, which counts the same as a Player of the Week. These nominees are gathered from each team in our coverage area during the season.

Burkett is the first of what will be three such winners in 2019. Burkett earns the honors for Weeks 1-4, and we’ll have another from Weeks 5-8, and a final one from Weeks 9-12. Coaches were asked to nominate a player. In the situation a nomination was not given, we selected who we felt from each program made a good choice based on statistical data provided on MaxPreps or Hudl.

Burkett won the public vote for the award with a whopping 10,000 votes of the total 36,198. Many others showed well in voting, including Union’s Sloan Sutton (8,228), Banks’ Jace Bennett (6,283), Habersham’s Tanner Wade (3,749), and Dawson’s Riley Herndon (2,555).
