Opening night thrills: Week 1 Scores & Recaps

Week One was everything we hope it’d be. The anticipation leading up was well worth the wait, as many of our local programs got off on the right foot with an opening night win. See below for recaps of the action.

THE LOCAL 11

Dawson County 28, Habersham Central 13

Habersham battled back to take a second quarter lead after trailing 10-0 quickly. However, the Raiders were held in check in the second half while Dawson scored 14 unanswered points. Shawn Thomas (2 TD), Ryte Woodruff (2 TD), and Caleb Bonesteel (2 FG) did most of the scoring, while Zach Holtzclaw added a TD. The game featured four turnovers and Thomas taking the opening kickoff back for a touchdown.

#10 Oconee County 21, #7 Jefferson 20

After a scoreless first quarter in this top-10 matchup, Colby Clark opened the scoring on the first play of the second with a short TD run to give Jefferson a 7-0 lead. Oconee tied it going into the half with a late score. The Dragons reclaimed the lead with a gutsy fourth down TD pass from Clark to Donsha Gaither, but Oconee retaliated within five minutes to tie it again at 14. Early in the fourth, Malaki Starks scored a TD on a pass from Clark, but a failed 2-point conversion left a slim 20-14 lead. Oconee scored a TD and an extra point with 4 minutes to go for the 21-20 win.

Stephens County 42, Franklin County 21

A lightning delay took up much of the night when the Indians were up early 7-0. Stephens raised the bar going into the half with a 21-7 lead. Franklin battled back within 28-21 going into the final quarter, but a TD run and a scoop-and-score (fumble return for a TD) put the game away in the fourth.

East Jackson 25, Lumpkin County 22

BoJack Dowdy scored in the first to push the Indians out to a 15-0 early lead, but East Jackson stormed back late for the win. However, after East Jackson scored to cut it to 15-6, Tate Reinhardt took a kickoff back for a TD to push it back to 22-6. A long TD run for the visitors bridged the gap late in the half to 22-12. That gap shrunk further with a TD pass to open the third, making it 22-19. A short yardage TD run to end the third capped the scoring at 25-22 in favor of East Jackson.

Hayesville 35, Towns County 0

Hayesville wasted no time in snapping a four-game losing streak to rivals Towns County, who struggled to find much rhythm in head coach Jason Roquemore’s debut.

#4 Rabun County vs Bremen
(Saturday at Ga Southern)

Rabun and Bremen square off in Statesboro on Saturday evening.

#5 Commerce 48, West Hall 17

Commerce held a 21-10 lead at the half over West Hall, and never relinquished, racing out to a 48-17 victory in the season opener.

Jackson County 7, Banks County 0

Rich McWhorter was a winner in his debut for Jackson, although it wasn’t very pretty. Neither team could get much going on offense, but both defenses played their tails off.
