Crystal Ball: Week 1 BLITZ Predictions

Okay…we don’t have a crystal ball really. There’s no way we will guess correctly every time. HOWEVER, it’s worth noting that BLITZ’s all-time going rate is 79% for picking over 1,700 football games since 2008. Our best year was 2013 (88.2%), and perhaps there’s something to getting older. In five of the last six seasons, BLITZ is 81% or higher on predictions.

DISCLAIMER: We dissect the numbers, check against other projections, utilize the brain and not the heart. If we pick against any of our beloved 11 programs, take it as a diss if you want, or use it as motivation. We obviously would love to see all 11 programs win every single game, so we’ll celebrate even if we’re wrong if it means our locals walk away as winners.

Dawson County vs Habersham Central

The Tigers and Raiders square off in Dawsonville. If the game is anything like last season, that will be exciting! That game came down to the final play, a 4th-and-goal do or die score for Dawson with mere seconds to go. Most of the names we called out that night are gone on both sides. New quarterbacks, new skill players, new names altogether. However, Dawson County gets the edge here being at home and bringing back more starters from a year ago…BUT Habersham has some DUDES that have come to play in 2019. This one we will put up to a FAN VOTE for our official pick.

#7 Jefferson vs #10 Oconee County

Jefferson brings back almost everyone from last year, and the depth might be the best of any team in this part of the state. That said, Oconee is no slouch. With the Dragons seeking to get the taste of a first round exit out of their mouth, and opening at home, we pick JEFFERSON

Stephens County vs Franklin County

The Indians were ahead of schedule last year. We are excited for the trio of Kenny Colwell (QB), Hudson Spurlock (RB), and Gamarion Carter (WR) as well as many other playmakers on this roster to do some damage. Opening at home helps, but Franklin tends to play tough. Still, we pick STEPHENS

Lumpkin County vs East Jackson

The Indians have a clean slate. New coach, new offensive system (the scrimmage looked great with the passing game we haven’t seen since Taylor Guthrie was the QB in ’09-11). East Jackson is actually a step behind Lumpkin in terms of building back up. This is a learning curve season for them. We pick the home team, LUMPKIN

Towns County vs Hayesville

No need to waste much time on this one. Hayesville hasn’t beaten the rivals since 2013 in regular season action. Towns has won this matchup in each of the past three years. This one might be harder with losing so many talented players off last year’s team, but we still pick TOWNS

#4 Rabun County vs Bremen
(Saturday at Ga Southern)

Rabun is back, albeit without a few All-State players. However, when Gunner Stockton is your QB, the sky is the limit. The skill positions are set, with Braxton Hicks looking for another huge year to get him some more D-I offers, and Brody Jarrard to lead the charge at RB. The defense will always be ball-hawks under DC Rob Stockton, and the excitement is there with the head coaching debut of Jaybo Shaw. Last year this same matchup at Georgia Southern ended in a walk-off field goal for Bremen…that won’t happen this year. We pick RABUN

#5 Commerce @ West Hall

We’ll go ahead and save you some reading time. Tigers all the way. We pick COMMERCE

Banks County @ Jackson County

This may come down to the wire. Jackson County is rebuilding under new head coach Rich McWhorter, an incredible coach with four state titles. It doesn’t matter that he took over a 3-win team. Banks County lost about 90% of its touchdown talent from last year, but Sawyer Pace will lead the Leopards under center for coach Jay Reid. Jackson gets the edge being at home. We pick JACKSON

Predicted winners are in bold

#2 Buford @ Milton
Gainesville vs #7 Mary Persons
Johnson vs Oglethorpe
Flowery Branch vs East Hall
Chestatee vs North Hall
Cherokee Bluff @ Whitfield Academy
Riverside Military vs Christian Heritage
