For Union County, the Panthers made history with a 3-0 win over Vidalia on the road to advance to the state championship game in Class 2A. Both Jefferson programs fell Tuesday night in their semifinals matchups, ending their seasons. Recaps below.
Lovett 1, Jefferson Lady Dragons 0
The Lady Dragons, ranked #7 in the state, had beaten the #3 (Pike Co) and #2 (Dawson Co) teams in the state in back-to-back playoff wins coming into the semifinals. However, Jefferson (14-5-1), which allowed just 12 goals all season, fell 1-0 to Lovett on the road to end their season.
The Lady Dragons’ defense was spectacular, holding a team that has scored 98 goals this year to just the one. Lovett will take on Westminster in the 3A State Championship.
Westminster 3, Jefferson Dragons 0
Jefferson (17-3) saw its season come to a close in a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Westminster. The #6 Dragons had been perfect to that point in the playoffs, with three straight clean sheets. Even with three goals allowed in the semifinals, Jefferson surrendered just 13 all year.
Westminster (20-1) is the overall #1 team in the state in Class 3A, and will take on Coahulla Creek in the state title game.
Union Co Panthers 3, Vidalia 0
Union County (13-4) has had a dream run this season. The Panthers made sure to keep it going with an easy 3-0 win over Vidalia on the road. Union has toppled the #8 (Lamar County), #10 (Gordon Central), and now the #6 (Vidalia) teams in the state in this run to the State Championship, which is the first appearance in school history. The cinderella team continues to chug along, as the Panthers are a rare #4-seed to make it to the title game. The current tally for Union is 47 goals for and 24 against for the season.
Next up, Thomasville, a #1-seed from Region 1. The title game will be played on neutral turf at Mercer University on Friday, May 17 at 7:30 PM.
