Jefferson, Union teams set sights on semifinals

We started with 16 local soccer teams vying for a state title. Of those, 8 survived to the Sweet 16. That pool of teams then narrowed down to 4. If that pattern holds true, two of these teams could be playing in the semifinals. Take a glance at the Jefferson and Union matchups for quarterfinals action.

Jefferson Lady Dragons @ Pike Co

The #7-ranked Lady Dragons earned a right to be in the quarterfinals after a 2-0 win over #2-ranked Dawson County. Jefferson (13-4-1) has only allowed 9 balls into the back of the net in 2019, and have scored 52 times.

Pike County is the #1-seed out of region 4, and are the #3-ranked team in the state at 16-2-2. Pike has an elite offense that has a grand total of 126 goals scored, and has allowed just 21 goals as well.

Jefferson Dragons vs Tattnall Co

The #6-ranked Dragons (16-2) got an incredible PK victory over East Hall, with Javy Flores playing the game of his life. This followed a 2-0 first round win over Stone Mountain, so that Dragon defense is playing lights out right now. Jefferson has 62 goals for and just 10 against all season.

Tattnall County (2-0-1) has an incomplete record published, so we don’t have much knowledge of this group, aside from the fact they are the #1-seed from Region 2, and won 2-1 over Savannah Arts in the opening round, and 4-0 over Worth County in the Sweet 16.

Union Co Lady Panthers vs St. Vincent’s Academy

The #6-ranked Lady Panthers (12-2-1) cruised to an 8-0 win over Temple in the first round, and followed that up with an easy 5-0 win over Gordon Central. 74-13 is their goal differential on the season, and they’ll put that to the test against St. Vincent’s Academy (14-5)

SVA won 10-0 over Washington County in the first round and 4-0 over Thomasville in the second round to get to the quarterfinals. With 111 total goals, this group knows how to score. And with 17 allowed, they also know how to keep others off the board. Should be a defensive battle that could come down to the wire.

Union Co Panthers vs Jefferson Davis

Union County (11-4) had an incredible 2-1 win over #1-seed Lamar County, followed by a 3-2 dramatic comeback win over Gordon Central. The Panthers now have 40 total goals and 24 against this season. This game could prove to be just as dramatic against Jefferson Davis (13-5-2), as this pits two #4-seed teams in the quarterfinals. Union gets the home game out of this.

Jefferson Davis has 72 goals for, and 25 against this year, and had a 2-1 win over Dodge County in the opening round and a 3-0 win over Berrien in the second round.
